The Serpentine grasslands are a low nutrient home for many endangered insects and plant species, however with the increase of nitrogen from the atmosphere, more and more invasive species of plants have been taking over the native plants home. To prevent this, the researchers set out to test the hypothesis if grazing by cattle can control the spread of invasive species. To test out their hypothesis, the researches created five plots on a San Jose, California grassland. They then split these independent blocks to five sub plots, within these five plots were five different controls: grazed/unfertilized (control), grazed/fertilized, ungrazed/unfertilized, and ungrazed/fertilized.
