Mengele grew up in a troubled family, performed horrific experiments, and proved just how deadly and inhumane medical experiments can be. Josef Mengele was born on March 16, 1911 and was the oldest of three sons. Mengele’s father was Karl Mengele and his mother was Walburga Mengele. Mengele grew up in the Bavarian Village of Gunzburg. Karl Mengele owned a local factory that manufactured farm equipment. Walburga Mengele had a horrible temper and came to the factory just to criticize the workers. One of Mengele’s experiments was where he didn’t allow a mother to feed her infant to see how long the baby could survive. The mother tried to keep the baby alive by feeding it other things, but after a week a Jewish doctor told her that the baby could not live so the mother killed her baby so it didn’t have to suffer any longer. Mengele injected a twin with something that made her get a high fever and swell on her arms and legs, he then told her that in two weeks she was going to die, but after the two weeks her fever broke and she survived. Mengele also experimented on how high a human could go into the atmosphere before they died. Mengele tested how much a person could withstand being burned; he also tested how long people could last in a tank of ice water. Mengele experimented with what would happen if a person drank only seawater. Mengele injected people with malaria and typhus and then treated them to test his medicine. Mengele tested how effective mustard gas was on the people and also injected people with poison to see how long they could live.
