I participated in this service learning programme at Carinya aged Care … Preston Point road Bicton WA. This organisation assists and cares for the elderly and those who cannot support themselves. I started my volunteering on the 31st of June and completed the twenty hours in the weeks that followed. That wee are all created in God’s Image and likeness and the Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of moral vision for our society. It also believes that every person is precious and it calls people to love and treat everyone equally. Carinya Aged Care follows this teaching through the equal treatment of residents and the respect and love shown towards the elderly there. While volunteering, I witnessed all the staff members working continuously to assist the elderly and to create a warm, comfortable and loving environment, through allowing outdoor time, as well as extra blankets for those who were cold and pillows for those in beds. It allows student like myself to venture out of our comfort zone to help those in our society and to discover more about ourselves.
When first beginning the service activities I was a little hesitant with handling and interacting with the elderly. I found the whole process confronting and overwhelming at times, most probably as I was outside my comfort zone however, as time went by, I found myself opening up and becoming more comfortable around the residents which significantly increased the enjoyment and the .. gained from this experience.
