Serving in Florida is a short passage about the unfair employment environment in Florida, and is written by a woman who found herself struggling in it. As stated in the passage, Florida has very poor opportunities for employment, and not all people can support themselves. The narrator is stuck in a bad location and is unable to get a good job. This is because Florida does not provide good job opportunities for all people. Employers discriminate when hiring, and will use gender and race when looking through applicants. Florida’s lack of good employment forces people to pick from a limited number of jobs, work at jobs where they do not get enough pay, or to work under oppressive management. Florida’s limited job variety is one of the largest factors in its lack of good employment opportunities. Different types of jobs go to different types of people, in terms of race or gender. The narrator of Serving in Florida experiences this when searching for a job of her own. She notes that the only jobs available for her are restaurant or hotel jobs because she is a woman. She also observes that beyond gender, race also plays a factor, as white women primarily tend to get waitressing jobs, and black or latino women get jobs as hotel maids. These long hour have the effect of giving her little time to cook her own meals, and force her to eat prepared meals, which are more expensive.
