The Crucible Essay In The Crucible, Several Adolescent girls started a seemingly insane chain of events with their behaviors and accusations. The girls were caught dancing around a pot in the forest by the local minister, Reverend Parris. One of the girls, Parris’s daughter Betty, fell into a coma after they were caught performing some sort of ritual. When Reverend Parris questioned Abigail Williams, the girls’ ringleader, she lied about the events that took place in the forest to prevent being accused of performing witchcraft. After Abigail was questioned, she went and threatened the other girls not to testify or say anything about what they did in the forest. Tituba was questioned and beaten in front of the town. She eventually gave in and confessed that she had been communicating with the devil. Then Abigail also confessed that she had seen some of the townsfolk consorting with the devil. Shortly after Betty accused some townsfolk of being witches. The situation had put the whole town of Salem in calamity. Each time one of the girls would confess or try to cover up their impure actions the insane chain of events would escalate. Many of the townsfolk were put on witch trials because of the girls’ accusations. John Proctor, the local farmer who tried to enlighten the whole town on the ridiculousness of the trials. Abigail Williams accused Elizabeth, Proctor's wife, of being a witch also. Proctor couldn’t testify against Abigail because he had committed adultery with her and he would lose his reputation. The Puritan town of Salem was on the verge of falling apart. Abigail ran away, taking all of Parris’s money with her. Reverend Hale tried to help the accused witches to confess falsely in order to save their lives, but they refuse. In The end, Proctor does what is what is right sacrificing his life for his moral and beliefs. His refusal to give in to a lie that would make him look as if he was a saint allowed him to die with a clean
