Among this organization is Laurie Higgins, the author of the article “Parents Should Fight ‘Comprehensive’ Sex-Ed”. Initially from the title, the article looks like she would be in support of abstinence-only education, since it’s the opposite approach of comprehensive sex-ed. However, Higgins takes the conservative approach one step farther and alludes to the idea that public schools shouldn’t even teach students about sex.
Linda Lowen writes about both sides of the abstinence education debate in her article “10 Arguments for Abstinence - Pros and Cons of the Abstinence Debate.” Ms. Lowen has discussed each side thoroughly before moving from one topic to the next and presents herself as unbiased for most of her article. She briefly states her stance about contraceptive after discussing the data for a logical solution. Throughout her paper she uses logic and statistics as a baseline for the issues while building upon them with other rhetorical strategies for an unbiased and compromisable approach to sexual education.
So many different conclusions could be drawn from the same facts. The education system of this nation is biased. Evolution has been taught as Scientific fact for many years and creationism has been treated as just a religious belief and not worthy to be taught. Even though evolutionism is also a belief that has yet to be proven, it is taught as fact in every science class in America. The Supreme court has deemed that requiring educators to teach evolution and also teach creationism unconstitutional, but declaring that was merely a violation of equality and freedom of religion. (Epperson v. Arkansas) Creationism can’t be taught as a response to the theory of evolution, nor does creationism meet the faith of scientists.
Adolescence can be a hazardous and perplexing time and for teens, girls especially, and they do not deserve to have their authority figures teach them that their bodies and their natural human desires are things that are shameful. No adult should teach a child that they should cover or hide their bodies in disgrace. For preteens and young adults, living in one 's own skin is already hard enough, the added disrespect is not at all necessary or helpful. Abstinence only curriculums often promote sexism and can leave young people, especially girls, with the impressions that doing something that is very natural somehow degrades them, lessens their worth, or makes them dirty. This is detrimental to not only the way women view themselves but also to the way that men perceive female sexuality.

Going back to my bio, I joked that my sex education could be chalked up to an episode of “The Wonder Years.” I attended 1st-12th grade in Eugene, Oregon from 1980 to 1992.
