Blei’s argument, as to why banning the book is counter productive, is very insightful. While other critics argue that the profanities in the book should be ignored when considering banning the book, Blei accepts the profanities and points out that there are a multitude of other ways for kids to be exposed to such things in their
but that just like movies parental guidance is suggested so it makes sense that it should be banned but not for someone older who wouldn’t get distracted from the overall message. Child molestation is another reason this book was banned. Jeannette Walls talks about living with different relatives of the family and one of them attempting to do stuff with her and another time trying to do stuff with her little brother. It is made clear in the book that this wasn’t acceptable behavior on the adults part so I understand and agree that it isn’t for those younger than the age of sixteen.
Although some might say that certain situations with this book are crude and inappropriate they are very supportive towards the books context and how the reader interprets certain situations. Characters in this book may be found smoking or drinking which some parents find inappropriate for their children to read because it may effect them in other ways. Also characters can be found using Gods name in vain which is can be found offensive to religious families who do not want their children saying that outside of the book. There is also censorship or the burning of books that can be found inappropriate by some because these documents that they
Perchance some grown ups will find it interesting anyway. Usually, older folks have to read children’s books for something specific, to analyze it, to read it to their children, but maybe they do like reading it just for gratification. Nevertheless, a children’s book doesn’t have an audience restriction. It can educate and delight each one of us.
Schools that have sexually appropriate books are starting to get banned due to the sexual content. The book is about a 17 year old that is sexually active and proud’ “The story opens up with girls in the bathroom talking graphically about his sex life”. Again sexual context and it was being overused and the main topic was sex. “The sexual content of the book is immediate and is majority about his sex life”.that
It is unsuited for school age group. Besides, this book uses offensive words such as fuck, asshole, nigger and pussy etc. For example, in the book Arnold admits about masturbation “If there were a Professional Masturbator League, I’d get drafted number one and make millions of dollars” (Alexie 26). For this reason, the book is not appropriate for middle schools. For children, they are not capable enough to absorb these kinds of information from the book.
With all the good examples Petry has provided throughout the Street to show that sexual content does have a negative factor within working class. Literary books are not only examples that show sexual content having a negative aspect on the working class, the bible also does show a sign of representation as well. 2nd Samuel chapter 11 is an example of the representation that I am showing Ann Petry makes as well when they discuss david and uriah. So in this chapter we see that David whom is a king notices Uriah who is a solider, david notices his wife Bathsheba bathing and grew instant sexual attraction to her.
Socio-linguist Deborah Tannen demonstrates how men and women communicate differently in her essay “Sex, Lies and Conversation: Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other?” In her observations of communication styles, she discusses the way in which men and women communicate leads them to conflict because they have different understanding of their partners’ role. She also explains male and female communication differences not only cause ineffective conversation, but also push couples into a dilemma in their relationship; however, as men and women better understand the differences, their relationship improves. In the first part of her essay, Tannen discusses men and women do not have enough effective communication, which damages their marriage.
“The state of kids publishing is such that it’s perfectly reasonable to be concerned about what agenda-driven and/or prurient content they’re peddling.” (Hemingway) This means it is very reasonable for everyone to be concerned about what the kids and young adults are reading. If parents are not concerned about what their child is reading, their child will follow many bad influences from books they have read. There are many influential books such as The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton that should be banned.
and i used three different texts below from the articles I got. Then, I decided to use these three texts from each of the articles because two of them mostly talked about decisions people came up during the 1950s and now with to decide whether they should ban books depending on their views of what’s right or wrong. This text tells us that there is no point in banning books because many kids these days are aware of sex, gender, violence etc. However the Keller high school is considering banning these types of books with sexual, violence or anything that could be inappropriate for the school district.
If you really want a book not to be read by an adolescent, banning the book will often have an opposite effect. Although it contains sensitive topics and harsh language, The Secret Life of Bees should not be banned in high schools because students are not only mature enough to handle these issues but should, in fact, be exposed to them in an educational environment to help in the development of their maturing minds. Being exposed to course language at too early an age can often have negative effects on adolescent development. Profanity is inappropriate in a school setting so why should students be assigned to read a book that contains it? Most learn curse words at a very young age, and the foul language displayed is not used to promote vulgarity but rather to add a sense of realism to the narrative.
For Goodness Sex, by Al Vernacchio, is a welcome relief from the two previous books; Girls & Sex and Man Interrupted, as the focus is about sexuality as a whole; gender, sexual orientation, etc., rather than on the culture of females and males. In a chapter titled “Gender Myths,” Vernacchio (2014) asks the question, “male and female, is that all there is” (Vernacchio, A., p. 112, 2014)? In teaching his class on Sexuality and Society, Vernacchio asks these questions and questions similar, demonstrating that he takes into consideration that there are feelings at stake and keeps in mind the human aspect of sex and sexuality as he is intentionally behind challenging students to foresee and develop their sense of values about sex, instead of constantly being “in the moment.”
I feel like that should not be displayed in books. Books should not contain inappropriate and explicit content for certain audiences. Most of the books that are banned are inappropriate for most ages. “Some of the
Comparison of Why I Want a Wife and Sex, Lies, and Conversation Since we are kids, there has been a battle between men and women. The conflict is also of misunderstanding reactions of each one to problems with authority, financial problems, communication, etc. Women blame men for not wanting the relationship to work, while men defend themselves, saying that women are too emotional. These happen because men and women look for different behavior from the other one.
A parent or the student should be the one who decided whether or not the book is appropriate. Also, when a child is sheltered from the world, a book with just a bit of adult material could help them understand what really happens. It could prepare them so when they do become older and get a job, the world doesn’t put them into complete shock. Taken from Common Reasons for Banning Books, “…it is important that the reader makes his/her judgments on the book.” To elaborate on this, another person shouldn’t tell a student what and what not to read.
