In today’s day and age, people think we would have moved on from discrimination between men and women, but this is not the case. Inequality is alive and well in our every day lives, but it is especially apparent in the media. Although women have been gaining more and more equality, like the right to vote. There is still a lot of work that still needs to be done. The media is one of the worst offenders of sexism because it puts a lot pressure on women to act and look a certain way in order to fulfill society's ideas. From a young age girls are being told what and who they should become. Joe dolls and a much bigger variety of turf guns. Some would say that toys are conditioning kids or the adult world. It is stereotypically thought that women, once they have a baby, become stay at home moms while the man continues to be the working dad. It is rare to find a man being a stay at home dad and the women being the working mom. This stereotype is so drilling into people’s heads that “There exists, for instance, dolls which urinate…wet their nappies…this is meant to prepare the little girls for the causality of home-keeping” (Barthes 38). Girls are being told from day one at they are meant to grow up, get married, and have babies. That is how things have been for year. With this in mind girls are often more worried about being single as they get older which can lead to other issues. It is just sad that women have a hard time staying authentic when it comes to dating. If both men and women stopped listening to what the media says women should be and act maybe women would start feeling more comfortable in their own skins. This would result in women being true to themselves and to others. The media needs to stop promoting the classic stereotypes of women. Women are told they must always be beautiful. Societies standard of beauty tends to be someone who has long hair, gorgeous face and often skinny. Men are always described or shown as big strong men while the women are always delicate in readings you’ll find sentences like “…[he] placed his big hands on the girls tiny waist…” (Vonnegut 4). This stereotype is telling women that they are delicate and need protection from the big strong man. It is not telling women that they can stand on their own and be independent. Men are always depicted as being independent and women are always dependent. If society is ever going to break the stereotype everyone has to come to the understanding that both men and women are equal and
