The majority of human civilizations throughout history have been ruled exclusively through a patriarchal system. Though we do not live in a definite patriarchy in the modern world, the lack of female representatives in governments globally or as [inter] national leaders suggests the presence of barriers towards women. These barriers are not only implied by the scarcity of female leaders but are in fact enforced by stagnated social stigmas, which target women and are a direct result of male chauvinism.
Sexism is defined as discrimination based on sex. Many definitions include the phrase “especially against women”. This definition is then sexist in itself, suggesting that only men are sexist. The fact that this is included in the definition highlights the current cultural state of mind. Earlier this year a shooting occurred in California in which six people died and a further seven sustained injuries. The perpetrator was Elliot Roger who was enraged that, at the age of 22, he was still a virgin. If a man is rejected by a woman when asking to date her it is referred to as being ‘friendzoned’ - meaning that the man believes he has been placed in a zone by this woman and is therefore not ‘dating material’. This notion perpetuates sexism and also forms a part of rape culture since it is believed that being “the ultimate gentleman” should be rewarded – sexually, by preference.
