Many of the victims of sexual assault know their assailant personally. Allison one of the victims whom story Krakauer mentions in his book. Her assailant was her best friend Beau Donaldson. He was someone she put her life in their hands.
We tend to pay more attention to subjects in the news that usually relate and have an impact on our lives. I for one, am normally like that. When I saw the list of topics to choose from, I felt like I had a good understanding of all of the topics except for one. Before diving into the issue, I decided that I wanted to focus on a few specific questions.
In Zoë Heller’s Rape on the Campus, She advocates how sexual assault happens often on campuses, and that it needs to be significantly more addressed; as it is scarce for women to bring the college’s attention to the assault. Heller asserts that, “20 percent of women are sexually assaulted during their time at college and as few as 5 percent of these assaults are ever reported to police” (185). Noting that ninety-five percent of sexual assault cases are dealt by the college, colleges can take advantage and handle its reputation by outputting false information to cover any potential negative reputation. While colleges are forced to obey the rules of title IX, I believe this is an inadequate effort to remove bias teachers and workers from colleges.

Child Molestation involve an underage child, usually five to ten years of age. The child is forced and threaten to do the things the molester is telling him/her to do to them .
However, even though they are usually not the ones at fault, nothing is ever said about the event. In a report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, it was found that 75 to 77 percent of sexual assaults, attempted rapes, and completed rapes were never reported (“Sexual Assault and Rapes”). Furthermore, the blame of the whole event was never put on the person responsible. Instead, the victim was blamed for not denying the advances, or for not making themselves clearer in their intents(“Sexual Assault and Rapes”). This huge chip to carry often leaves the victims feeling isolated, scared, full of shame, depressed, and with a low self-esteem(“Sexual Assault and Rapes”).

Sexual assault is a hotly debated topic which often divides opinion in the criminological field. Theories surrounding sexual violence attempt to explain why individuals engage in these behaviors and ways in which they may be prevented. In this essay, I have outlined three different theories of sexual violence: the social learning theory, the feminist theory, and the biological determinism theory. The social learning theory suggests that individuals learn behaviors through observation and imitation.

As theorised by Bourdieu (1982) symbolic power as ‘the power to create reality through language’ (Matoesian 1995:38) is successfully employed in rape trials to instil patriarchal and legal domination over the victim.
