Three Different Theories Surrounding Sexual Assault

1101 Words5 Pages

Sexual assault is a hotly debated topic which often divides opinion in the criminological field. Theories surrounding sexual violence attempt to explain why individuals engage in these behaviors and ways in which they may be prevented. In this essay, I have outlined three different theories of sexual violence: the social learning theory, the feminist theory, and the biological determinism theory.

The social learning theory suggests that individuals learn behaviors through observation and imitation. In the context of sexual assault, this theory suggests that individuals who have been exposed to violent or aggressive behavior may be more likely to engage in similar behaviors themselves. This theory also suggests that individuals who have been …show more content…

One key aspect of the social learning theory is the idea of modeling. Modeling refers to the process by which individuals observe and imitate the behavior of others. In the context of sexually motivated crimes, modeling could occur through exposure to violent pornography or through witnessing violent or aggressive behavior in one's family or community. For example, an individual who has been exposed to violent pornography from an early age may learn that sexual violence is acceptable or even desirable behavior. Another important concept in the social learning theory is reinforcement. Reinforcement refers to the process by which individuals are rewarded or punished for their behavior. In the context of sexually motivated crimes, reinforcement could occur through positive feedback from peers or through a lack of consequences for violent behavior. For example, an individual who engages in sexual violence may receive positive feedback from influential people in their lives who view this behavior as acceptable, or they simply may not be faced with any consequences for their actions. The social learning theory provides a useful framework for understanding sexually motivated crimes because it …show more content…

This suggests that sexually violent offenders who procreate may pass genes to their child which will determine whether that child imitates similar behaviors. The work of Cesare Lombroso correlates biological determinism in connection to violent crimes. One key aspect of biological determinism is the idea of genetic predisposition. Genetic predisposition refers to the idea that certain genes may make individuals more likely to engage in criminal behavior, including sexual violence. Another important concept in biological determinism is the role of hormones. Hormones such as testosterone have been linked to aggressive and violent behavior and may contribute to the perpetration of sexual assault offences. While research has identified some genetic factors that may be associated with increased risk for violent behavior, it is important to recognize that genetics alone do not determine behavior. Environmental factors also play a significant role in shaping behavior. This means that while biological factors may contribute to the perpetration of sexual violence, larger societal structures must also be taken into account when examining the causes of sexually motivated
