The research question is if stalking is a learned phenomenon. Stalking is when someone harasses, threatens, and acts in unwanted behavior. The study examines why people become stalkers or victims and in order to find this out they look at the social learning theory test propositions. Stalking usually is seen in intimate partner violence. The study looks at whether there is an explanation for stalking behavior by the social learning theory.
Survey data from a large sample of college students were used to assess the likelihood of victimization and perpetration of stalking based on social learning theory. An analysis of 2,766 college students regarding stalking perpetration and victimization was conducted using a logistic regression model. Based on the results, victimization and perpetration were related to social learning. As well both victimization and perpetration of stalking were significantly more common among females. The study suggests that interpersonal interactions are primarily responsible for learning, refining, or reinforcing responses, attitudes, and behaviors related to stalking. There are many similarities between IPV and stalking. They are both consider to be linked to crimes of power and control. Social learning theory also supports the explanations for IPV.
