In the United States of America, we value our military and are proud of every general, commander, and soldier enlisted. They provide protection for the country, in fact our nation would not survive without them. That is exactly what the United States government wants us to think, much of society is unaware of major problems that occur in the military. One major issue in the military is sexual assault, it is so common that one in five soldiers experience unwanted touching since their enrollment (Francis). Sexual assault in the military is an issue because of the economic burden passed on to taxpayers and the post traumatic damage that the victims are dealt.

Leaders in the military, such as highly ranked generals or commanders are sexual assaulting soldiers and have the ability to cover up their actions. Because they are so highly ranked, “The uniform represents a protective shield if you’re a rapist with rank.” (Childress). Leadership is getting away with these actions because most sexual assaults go unreported. In fact, the government will do everything in their power to keep military personnel out of court room. Considering that most of the costs will be covered by taxpayers, and are so unaware of what their money is truly going towards. It is sad to think that we are wasting all of our money paying for situations that can be completely avoided. It was stated, “We need a culture change, every service member is treated with dignity and respect...where victims privacy is protected” (Francis). It is almost impossible for society to fix the problems of sexual assault in the military because it is either covered up or unreported. Military leadership needs to stop taking advantage of their power, if so America would be far more successful because we would be using that funding for something
