The first year of college is full of excitement. New beginnings, new surroundings, and new expectations on the life ahead of a college student. What’s not expected in the first year of a students’ college experience is that the possibility of sexual harassment or sexual assault.
Sexual harassment is an unwelcomed verbal or physical sexual contact. Sexual harassment is mostly seen in a workplace setting, but as the years went by it has been seen more in an educational setting. When sexual harassment happens in an educational setting it is filed under the law Title IX. In the article “10 Key Areas of Title IX”, it explains that sexual harassment in educational setting includes any unwanted and unwelcome sexual behavior that significantly interferes with a student's access to educational opportunities. It’s something that college students never thought of because sexual harassment or assault isn’t the first topic that comes to mind when they think of their transition into their first year of college. One of the types of harassment in college could occur between a professor and a student when it is either implied or stated that a reward, such as a higher grade or extra credit, will be delivered if a sexual request is granted. Another type of harassment that is seen on college campuses is between students. There are two reasons why a student sexually harasses another student. It is common that students would use sexual harassment as a way to bully a fellow student. Another reason a student sexually harasses another student is if they find them attractive and the fellow student doesn’t have the same feelings. Some signs of sexual harassment are if they make sexual jokes towards the victim, have unwanted touching, and would make rude sexual remarks.
