To be a leader, what does that mean to you? Well to most it is a public figure that represents a large group positively. Good traits of a leader would have to be, stay engaged, remaining positive and optimistic, and also being very confident. A good leader should present all of these traits. Now with the topic of “Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World” the Leader, Shackleton presented all of these traits which had helped the entire crew get through the endeavour. Shackleton had been to the arctic many times which had been previous experience for the journey ahead. With this experience most would think everyone would be ready for the journey. Being engaged in this kind of situation would make the situation much easier by relieving the pressure on the crew. Consequently this would also brief Shackleton almost always and if this was the case, then giving orders would be an even easier job. His crew would have perished because, if he didn't remain confident he would have given up on the crew on Elephant island and also the crew he had been sailing to South Georgia island with. This would have been due to the thought of not making the correct calls due to the little amount of sunlight that the navigator could have used to calculate their approximate location in the ocean which would have lowered the morale of the entire crew on the James Caird. Clearly, Shackleton does present this characteristic because throughout the entire novel he shows all of the characteristics that a person with confidence should show considering that he kept his chin up through it all making the situation a lot less hard on the other crew
