This literary device consists in exaggerating an idea to add emphasis and to create a strong impression of the real situation of something. The hyperbolic statements are unreal, so they are not likely to be true and they are not meant to be taken literally. For example, when Capote talks about the fury Dick has because of Perry’s insistence that the newspaper is a trap, he exaggerates Dick’s emotion by telling that saliva bubbles appear at the corner of his mouth. “Nevertheless, Perry observed with some misgiving the symptoms of fury rearranging Dick’s expression: jaw, lips, the whole face slackened; saliva bubbles appeared at the corners of his mouth.” (Capote 99).
Authors have to be credible to allow their readers to trust what they are reading. Gill relies on pathos to establish credibility with the reader in his memoir How Starbucks Saved My Life. Hyperboles and diction is used in the novel to establish credibility with pathos. When the author shows their emotions in their memoir, it creates a sense of credibility for the author and makes the reader think the author is a trustworthy source. Hyperboles help highlight the authors emotions in a novel.
I think that allusions are a great tool for literature. They provide information such as what the character believes in and what society is like to the audience. I think that the Shakespearean audience would have understood the allusions because it is during their time period and they understand what everything is like. Yet, if this play was acted today, I don 't think that all of the allusions would be understood. This is because of how different the worlds are today.
“Brutality of Love” through Figurative Language Figurative language is often used in many pieces of writing. The use of figurative language adds color, along with other numerous elements to the writing. Even themes can be advanced through the use of figurative language. Of course, this is not something unheard of, as Shakespeare himself used figurative language to advance certain themes in his writing, “Romeo and Juliet” -- a writing which dates back to the late 1500’s. Within the play/writing, “Romeo and Juliet”, the theme: “brutality of love” is quite evident through the use of figurative language types: personification, simile, and metaphor, as they are used to advance the theme.

Throughout the play Hamlet is dealing with the loss of his father, in fact he gives several soliloquies about it. Perhaps the most famous soliloquy given is the one from Act III, scene i. Hamlet begins with the famous line, “To be, or not to be, that is the question:”(1). Although there are many literary devices used within this excerpt, the most prominent are syntax, diction, and imagery, and Shakespeare creatively uses each to portray Hamlet’s state of mind. At first the sentences are short and contradicting, hinting towards instability, just within the use of syntax.
In the first Act of A Midsummer Night's Dream, main characters are introduced in a way that sets the tone for the rest of the play. Egeus' first speech, found on lines 23 to 46, is a perfect example of this; through his speech themes of domination and control, and his accusatory themes, he affirms the accepted positions of power of his time. Language and grammar used here all give the reader an important first impression. Starting with the first line, Egeus states "Full of vexation come I". By placing the phrase "full of vexation" first, the vexation — vexation over the disobedience of his daughter — is emphasized.

Soliloquies, which are lengthy speeches by a character to project their thoughts and emotions to the audience, this allows the audience to be more attentive. Allusions are references by characters to well-known places, events from myths or other literature that cause the audience to be absorbed into the play. After reading this marvelous play, it is obvious that Shakespeare uses dramatic irony, allusions, and soliloquies all written in blank verse to grasp the undivided attention of the audience.
Shakespeare’s puns are often an important factor in his plays and sonnets. One of the most distinctive characteristics Shakespeare gave Hamlet is his humor. His humor begins with being a playful tone, however, he also uses puns as a way to convey his madness. Shakespeare uses puns and paradoxes most of the time in Hamlets dialogue. His first words in the play are towards King Claudius and are in the form of a pun, “A little more than kin, and less than kind.”
In this passage, Shakespeare utilizes metaphor and negative diction to characterize Romeo as a person who is conflicted and frustrated by love, which ultimately reveals the theme that love is uncontrollable, conflicting, and short-lived. Towards the end of act 1 scene 1, Romeo still has a big crush on Rosaline, but Rosaline has no feelings for him. Hence, Romeo experienced a sense of depression and is conflicted by love. Shakespeare incorporates tragedy into Romeo and Juliet with the use of plot, language devices and aesthetic features. With these devices Shakespeare integrates poetic dialogue, forbidden love and devastating tragedy into the script of the play. In ACT 3, scene 1, Tybalt kills Mercutio and is killed by Romeo who is then banished by the prince, these unfortunate events contribute to the tragedy of the play. The scene begins with Benvolio and Mercutio hanging out, mocking each other and insulting the Capulets.
Helena, one of the main characters of this Shakespearean comedy, expresses her thoughts on love through a soliloquy. This soliloquy is written in verse and in “iambic pentameter” - five unaccented syllables, each followed by an accented one - as the rest of the play is, but with the characteristic that it rhymes. The soliloquy is composed of “heroic couplets” - rhyming verse in iambic pentameter- in opposition to “blank verse” - unrhymed iambic pentameter- which is the predominant type of verse in the play. Throughout William Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 130,” the reader is constantly tricked into thinking he will compare his mistress to something beautiful and romantic, but instead the speaker lists beautiful things and declares that she is not like them. His language is unpredictable and humor is used for a majority of the poem. This captivating sonnet uses elements such as tone, parody, images, senses, form, and rhyme scheme to illustrate the contradicting comparisons of his mistress and the overarching theme of true love. Shakespeare uses parody language to mock the idea of a romantic poem by joking about romance, but ultimately writes a poem about it.
