Shakespeare Sonnet 130 Mood

Out of the 154 sonnets that Shakespeare wrote, sonnet eighteen and sonnet 130 are quite similar but differtent in many ways. When analyzing the two poems, “My Mistress’ Eyes Are Nothing Like The Sun” and “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day,” Shakespeare uses symbols to describe the aspects of the two poems. Shakespeare has been known to connect his poems by using symbolism. According to Ray Hawk symbols are “used to convey deeper meanings than the words themselves would otherwise” (1). In “My Mistress’ Eyes Are Nothing Like The Sun” and “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day,” Shakespeare uses symbols, tone, and mood to illustrate hidden messages in the poems and to show how beauty was preceived back in the day. The mood in “My Mistress’ Eyes Are Nothing Like The Sun” is depressing. The poem is very bland and dull. In some ways it leads the reader to remember the Great Depression. The poem is similar to the Great Depression because the atmospheres of both settings are dreary. Shakespeare says, “Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May” (3). Reading the words “rough winds,” automatically makes the readers predict a negative vibe towards the poem. The mood in “Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer’s Day” is dreamy. The poem begins by describing how Thee’s love is as a “Art”. This description conveys the idea of how Shakespeare’s lover is so picture perfect, but only on the outside. Later on in the poem Shakespeare states how he shall not lose his possession, nor how it will lose it’s value, in this case he was referring to his “Art”. All the lines in “Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer’s Day” convey the impression that the piece of “Art” is so heavenly that it makes the setting of the poem seem dreamy. The focus of the poem a visual of how heavenly this piece of “Art” and the setting really is. Moods in both of the poems are again, complete opposites. “Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer’s Day” is angelic and dreamy.
