This week and next week’s writing assignment will be split into two parts based on Eleanor Clarke Slagle’s lecture which examines the lives of those who have endured extraordinary hardships and their ability to rise above. Slagle’s case study poses the question: Who rises above adversity? Most of the data use in her study comes from personal experiences of those who have been faced with terminal illness, abuse, impoverishment, and incarceration. First I would like to provide a brief background on one of the earliest pioneers of occupational therapy. Eleanor Clarke Slagle was a social worker that directed occupational therapy research for the state of Illinois and organized a therapy program for the state’s mental hospitals.
Demographic Kerri Morgan is a forty-three-year-old woman who lives in St. Louis, Missouri. Kerri was born in New York, and at a young age her family relocated to St. Louis. St. Louis is unique, for the reason that it has the Special School system. Upon arrival, Kerri’s parents fought hard to have her attend a mainstream school. In the end, her parents won the battle and Kerri attended a mainstream school throughout her primary and secondary education.
Introduction For the environmental and organizational assessment I will be researching the May Institute/Behavioral Health Services, specifically the May Counseling @ Hyland Clinic in Fall River, MA. The Hyland Clinic has more than twenty therapists with specialties in many areas including: couples issues, substance abuse, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety, eating disorders, bereavement and grief, autism spectrum disorder, trauma, attachment and adoption specific issues, and early childhood mental health. For the purpose of this paper I will be interviewing an MSW who works with children with mental health concerns.
As kids, many of us grow up with stories of super heroes and people of greater power that help the helpless. We grow up thinking that only bad things happen in stories where heroic mutants can fix it. As adults, we start to see how messy the world is and wish those super heroes in stories were real. Just like Marvel has their Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the real world has social workers, who act as agents of change. An agent of change in the field of Social Work seeks to improve or restructure parts of the system that could be flawed or in some way harming people’s well-being.
A social worker has the ability to view the client from a multifaceted lens, person in environment. The capacity to do so will guide school social worker in supporting Toya. In working with Toya, social worker will explore the student’s individual special needs and struggles, and identify the outside sources that are impactful or resourceful. Toya is a student who attends a gifted program at Crenshaw High School an inner city school located in the center of Los Angeles. Toya was raised in family dynamic that led to physical and mental abuse.
The All Stars Project-Chicago SWOT Analysis Through the All Stars Project, over 53, 820 inner-city youth are given opportunities to transform their lives through the power of performance. This nonprofit reaches some of our nation’s most marginalized youth in six different cities: New York, Bridgeport, Chicago, Dallas, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The All Stars Project of Chicago has many strengths, including its direct response to the surrounding community’s need, and its status as a privately funded nonprofit; which overshadow its weaknesses of having a small staff and office space. There are many opportunities for growth including expanding partnerships with Chicago Public Schools and other similar organizations, and eventually expanding
In order to prosper as a physical therapist, I need a program I am proud of and that matches my values. My aspiration to pursue this career stems from desire to give back to the community, develop knowledge in the field through research, and ensure equality to the best of my ability. UW-Madison appears to have these characteristic instilled throughout its program with service oriented groups, premier research, student organizations, and more. In order to assist the underserved, I am interested in learning about and contributing to Global Health, MEDiC, and the Waisman Center to name a few.
As I read the case study of Almeada and baby Anne, I was inspired by her case manager Barbra LaRosa, she provided social care and became the “bridge” between Almeade and the systems. One function of bridging is to narrow the gap between the services being offered and the needs of the individuals who are receiving those services. (Woodside, M. R. (2015). An Introduction to the Human Services, 8th Edition) Ms. LaRosa applied social care to Almeada while she was pregnant with baby Anne, she recognized Almeada's problems in living and since she worked at the school, and Almeada had not returned from summer break, she reached out to her to see what was going on and learn more about her life.
If I was required to determine just one theme that has been exhibited and exemplified throughout my entire undergraduate career at the University of South Carolina, I would be able to say that it would be community. From my coursework, to the community service that I have been a part of, to the research that I have conducted, I have had a concentrated interest in aiding the Carolina, the South Carolina, and the national and global community when I can. Over the four years that I have been here my dedication to my community has transformed, drastically in certain ways. In the beginning I gave swaths of my time to taking part in volunteer projects across Columbia and the state, but over time and through my experiences I came to the realization
The clinicians have told me that this is a great placement that will definitely help prepare me for my LCSW State licensure. One critical skill to implement as a social worker is the importance of being empathetic and authentic when engaging with consumers. Through observing
The Refugee Experience “Today, more than 14 million men, women, and children have been forced to flee their homes, towns, and countries because they are afraid to stay”(Refugees: Who, Where, Why). These people are called refugees, and the main reason that causes them to leave is war. Ha, the main character from the novel Inside Out & Back Again, has to go through the same thing, fleeing South Vietnam during the Vietnam War with her family and trying to find a new home in America. Refugees, as well as Ha from Inside Out & Back Again, have to live through numerous traumatic experiences, including having to leave family and friends.
I worked directly with patients diagnosed with various psychiatric illnesses in groups designed to assist in rehabilitation and teaching activities of daily living. In these groups I helped with a wide range of activities such as assisting the patients with stimulating crafts, and encouraging them to participate in exercises and games, and answered questions related to the activities. Continuing my volunteer experience with occupational therapists I worked at Encore, an assisted living and rehabilitation setting. Here I worked with geriatric clients with both neurological and orthopedic impairments. I also spent time volunteering at Therapeutic and Recreational Riding Center, Inc. working with an occupational therapist in facilitating Hippotherapy to incorporate equine movement into treatment.
The quality MSW program offered at Our Lady of the Lake will enable me to conduct research into, and increase my understanding of the diversity this program entails. I know that my adaptive personality will help me to form lasting connections to further build my professional goals. I believe that I my passion, drive, having an open mind and willingness to learn will grant me success as a Social Worker. I am determined to do all that I can to pursue a Master’s degree in Social Work and commit myself to improving the social and personal experiences of family’s, geriatrics, and children. After receiving my degree, I want to find a career in Child Welfare, while also servicing the geriatric
Social workers understand that, because of difference, a person’s life experiences may include oppression, poverty, marginalization, and alienation as well as privilege, power, and acclaim. Social workers also understand the forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination and recognize the extent to which a culture’s structures and values, including social, economic, political, and cultural exclusions, may oppress, marginalize, alienate, or create privilege and power (2015 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards). (2015, July 15). My personal and
