The characters in Sharai Bohannon’s Craigslisted are grounded in realism. The events in the play become heightened and, at times, unrealistic, but the characters never stop leaning towards realism. That’s what helps connect us to the characters of Maggie, Haley, and Robin even when the situations are no longer relatable. While reading the play, I always felt like I knew someone like Maggie, Haley, and Robin because of their reactions, both good and bad, to the events of the plot. Sharai grounded the majority of her characters in some form of reality, none more than Maggie, Haley, and Robin. The character at the center of the play is Maggie. Throughout the play, Haley supports Maggie with her Craigslist endeavors. When the fight between Robin and Maggie heats up Haley is caught in the middle of it and tries to appease both sides. Haley is also always caught up with Maggie’s blog, and the latest happenings of the situation on social media. In that setting, Haley is probably the truest to modern college students. While she is supportive of Maggie using Craigslist at first, when Maggie becomes addicted it takes a toll on her. She never mentions it to Maggie, but when she stops being enthusiastic about the use of the platform, it is very clear. This is also very true to life, the amount of time Maggie started to spend with her clients and not with her friends would take a toll on anyone. Even when she is supporting Maggie’s use of Craigslist, going so far as to find her new clients, she is written with characteristics that never make her seem fake or forced for the story. She is very much written as realistically as Maggie and Robin, because when she is finding clients or reading Maggie’s blog, you feel as if you would too. There are many people in the world that would do exactly what Haley is doing. In their situation, Haley is very realistic in many ways. She is the opposite force of Robin, but they still represent many people in the
