Shel Silverstein Shel Silverstein once said, “If you are a creative person, you should go about your business, do your work, and not care about how it is received”. And that is exactly what this talented man did. Sheldon Allan Silverstein also was known as “Shel” Silverstein was born on September 25, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised by both his mother and father, Nathan and Helen Silverstein. Unfortunately, Sheldon was born during the “Great Depression”. Therefore, his family was going through some tough situations in his early life. And the situation became even worse when his sister “Peggy” was born in 1934. His family lived in an apartment and was raised in a quite noisy environment. It was a chaos! Growing up Sheldon was not at all studious. Instead, he would prefer to “doodle” around both at home and school. Sadly, his father did not approve of his behavior. On the other hand, his mother encouraged him causing conflicts between her and her husband. Nonetheless, Shelby did not feel accepted in his schools. He didn’t seem to fit in with the other students. Shel Silverstein entered the University of Illinois, but as in his childhood years, he still did not seem to fit in. He then entered the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where he also experienced the same issue as he did in the previous school. He refused to receive any teachers help. Therefore, in 1950, Silverstein entered Roosevelt University. This year was a start for Shel. There he studied English. He felt comfortable for once. He helped lay out the school paper as well as published his works in it. The newspaper was called, “Roosevelt Torch”. Sheldon’s English teacher at Roosevelt University recognized his talent.
