She often felt sad when they drove past houses and saw people entering their homes, she wished that was her sometimes. Her brother Jonny shared how difficult it is living in a shelter and how that 's something you don 't want anyone finding out about it. If people found out you would lose your friends and others would make fun of you. Their family was considered middle class before the recession hit.
This novel talks about the life in America during those times back in 1937 how many people struggled to live. Many people during those days lost their jobs. There was no welfare state or unemployment benefit. Disabled or old people had to depend on their families or charity and keep working for as long as they could. Everyone was so competitive in order to get a job.

When the Great Depression hit and the economy crashed in 1929, Louise’s father lost everything, including the ink manufacturing company. This meant that Christian was unemployed and out of work, and he had no idea what to do. His father-in-law went through the Depression until 1933, when he blew his brains out because it was all just too much for him. Without having a job, Christian had plenty of time to be with Louise but did not really use it. He and Louise had different interest because Christian never did anything but football and work so he never gained any interests or hobbies.
