Reading "Superman and Me" gave me conflicting feelings. Of course, the tale of a young boy striving to succeed in and environment where he is nearly required to fail is thrilling, yet it really makes you think of the environment itself. He was a young Indian child living on a reservation; however, he recognized that he was an intelligent person. Others around him tried to quiet him because Indian children were supposed to be dumb. Sherman Alexie wanted more out of life.
During the 1830s, the Great Depression took over America’s brightness and joy, shattering the American spirit. Citizens searched for a light to help people get their lives back together. During this searching, they found Seabiscuit to bring them hope. Seabiscuit is a racing horse that received the right trainer and rider to make him a legend. Seabiscuit’s story is beautifully portrayed in Laura Hillenbrand’s book, Seabiscuit.
Throughout this excerpt, the use of imagery is vital to the evolution of Chief Bromden. Chief wakes up with the sudden urge to do something. As he walks around, he feels the cold tiles against his feet, and he realizes how many times he had walked on the tiles before, but had never felt it at all. “I walked down the windows to one where the shade popped softly in and out with the breeze, and I pressed my head against the mesh.” In this paragraph the imagery of the smells and Chief presses his head against the mesh, appeals to the senses of smell and touch.
7. Cisneros does not represent dialect, slangs, and accents for poetic and comprehension purposes. The deletion of dialect, slangs, and accents contribute to its purpose to communicate the story in a more poetic manner. The themes and symbols use in the poetic writing are more significant when there is no dialect that could interfere with the figurative language. The structure of the novel could potentially be confusing to the reader, so the use of familiar language and style makes it easier to understand and perhaps more relatable.
1. The line “We lived on a combination of irregular paychecks, hope, fear, and government surplus food” is a hyperbole and zeugma. The word that creates the zeugma is the word lived, as the narrator uses the word lived to mean different things in the same context. The narrator actually lived off of paychecks and government food, but did not literally live off of hope and fear like the line suggests. The line is also a hyperbole because the author did not literally live off of the hope and fear, as you cannot sustain yourself with emotions.
Jonny would toss the ball to Owen and lift him up. It was easy for Owen to be lifted because he was so light. Owen would then dunk the ball through the rim of the hoop. It does not particularly seem logical, that two unathletic boys, who did not have any love for basketball, would spend hours and hours mastering “the shot”. The boys enjoyed “the shot,” but their main goal was to perfect it and be able to do it in two seconds.
The essay written by Sherman Alexie, uses many rhetorical devices to persuade the readers to help educate many who don’t get the opportunity to learn. One of the main rhetorical devices used in this essay was simple syntax. The sentences were quite short in many places. This was done to put emphasis on his childhood, and his experience with learning to read. In paragraph three Alexie uses lots of analogy.
When Junior refers to himself as “dangerous” this shows how fed up he is with everyone assuming things about him before they ever spoke a word to him. He was just trying to further his education as much as he could, but instead felt like an outcast for the color of his skin and where he had come
To begin with, In “loves vocabulary” Diane Ackeman uses figurative language to describe her ideas (on love) such as the bad side of love , and the power of love. The bad side of love is a paradox and also personification because the way Diane Ackeman uses the bad side of love is to prove a contradictory statement , an emotion of how love feels. Power of love ( a figurative language) she also uses is a metaphor because, she’s making love sound a certain way but it’s also not literal it’s just an way of explaining love in her meaning.
They are always leading their teammates and are electric on the court. When a new girl, Alexis, arrives at the school Josh and Jordan are quick to talk to her. Eventually, Jordan wins her over and they are now dating. Josh gets extremely jealous and decides to do something nearly unforgivable to Jordan. In their next game, Josh whips the ball at Jordan's head out of anger because of Alexis.
Faced with many obstacles from poverty to racial stereotypes, Junior must override them if he is to make his life better than that of fellow Indians. Interestingly, rather than letting the obstacles hold him back Junior understands that his destiny is in his own hands and he must celebrate who he is even if it means fighting. In the end, we see a boy who have managed to overcome all hardships to get to the top, even if it means making tough choices such as changing schools, therefore is could be seen that race and stereotypes only made Junior
Then, he later realized that he “ had challenged the alpha dog and was now being rewarded for it.” This evidence implies that Junior’s experience of being bullied by Roger triggered him to stand up for himself. His hope and perseverance while standing up for himself and others, led to a greater outcome. Now, Junior was being respected as a result of him having hope and standing up himself; he was
If the odds are not in one’s favor, it does not mean that he or she cannot accomplish his or her goals. Sherman Alexie proved this by overcoming the barriers and the doubts to become a writer. In his essay Superman and Me Alexie conveys anyone can accomplish their goals, he does this by using the rhetorical devices anecdote, ethos, and anaphora. Alexie utilizes personal anecdotes throughout the essay to demonstrate how he has overcome the odds. In the beginning he discussed how he was introduced to reading, then conveys the extent of his effort towards reading and how it has assisted him in becoming a successful writer.
Junior shows Rowdy that this isn't true and he can share his feelings with Junior because Rowdy knows Junior won't judge
The song, “Someone Like You” by Adele uses many forms of figurative language, such as repetition, similes, and metaphors. Adele tells us that it can be callous to move on but it is always possible to find happiness again. The song is about Adele and another guy ending their relationship. She is not over him, but she is convinced she can be happy again without him.
