The Crossover, by Kwame Alexander, is a book about 2 brothers who have dreams of making it to the NBA one day. Their dad was in the NBA and won a championship ring. The brothers, Josh and Jordan Bell play on the same basketball team and they are the best on their team and are always working together. One day they experience a conflict that interferes with their relationship and basketball. Jordan Bell’s actions affect his brother Josh and their relationship negatively, because Jordan dates a girl he and his brother are both in love with. These actions advance the plot by creating tension and a conflict that the characters must overcome. They are always leading their teammates and are electric on the court. When a new girl, Alexis, arrives at the school Josh and Jordan are quick to talk to her. Eventually, Jordan wins her over and they are now dating. Josh gets extremely jealous and decides to do something nearly unforgivable to Jordan. In their next game, Josh whips the ball at Jordan's head out of anger because of Alexis. After being in the hospital, the car ride home was silent. Josh felt extremely distant from his family in the car ride home. In the book, Josh says, “Jordan, bandaged and hurt, leans against the window, and with less than two feet between us, I feel miles away from all of them” (Alexander 137). Josh’s actions hurt not only his family, but himself too. Jordan now wants nothing to do with Josh after he blatantly tried to hurt him over a girl. If someone does anything to jepradise that it can be hard to earn it back. When Josh hurt Jordan it ruined the brotherhood that they had built, and it took awhile before they were able to rebuild it. They are able to rebuild the bond that Josh had broke by working together on the court. In the book Josh states “ Rember man, a great team has a good scorer with a teammate who's on point and ready to assist” (Alexander 214). From that point on they were laughing and enjoying each others company. When Josh and Jordan are in their zone they are unstoppable.
