In every short story the writers use some kind of symbolisms to develop their characters and to reveal their point view of the story. In “Hand” and “Death in the Woods” by Sherwood Anderson the author is using the actions of the characters to guide the readers to a main point. In “Hands”, Anderson uses Wing’s actions as a symbolism to reveal Wings characteristics and his point of view. When Wing Biddlebaum met people he is nervous and always hide his hands in his pocket. When Wing talks with his best friend George, he does not hesitate to talk or even showing his hands and even taught him, how to dream? This shows the reader that something had happened to him in the past that associate with his hands, that him as a grotesque character. Mrs. Grimes "Feeding" routine was a symbolic in this short story by Anderson. Where ever she is, her job was to feed others, "she was a bound girl" (Anderson 2). She has to feed the family, stocks and even feed man's pleasure. No one ever cared or even thought about her and what she is doing. When she got married to Grime, she may have thought her life would change, but it did not, she has to do the same old routine. Even her husband did not think about her, she has to find money to buy household materials in order to feed them. When the two brothers get to the town from the dead site, they were late and had to do their job before they went to their home. So that "Either mother or older sister would have to warm their supper" (Anderson 10). I think Anderson is pointing out all the women in the families do their job that everyone is expecting from them, which no one appreciate or care what they are doing for them.
