Authors utilise a range of emotive scenarios allowing the reader, to immerse themselves in situations that aren’t common to what they normally experience. Through various means, author Tim Pegler, delves into the concepts of grief and sadness in his novel “Five Parts Dead.” Pegler effectively explores and addresses the results of traumatic scenarios upon the individuals, both directly and indirectly. Additionally, Pegler uses emotive language to portray the life of protagonist to be consumed by tremendous guilt and grief, another contributing factor is the fact that the protagonist emotions are portrayed through the first person point of view, thus strengthening connections made with the protagonist and the reader. As well as the protagonist,
In “Shoofly Pie”, the author Naomi Nye, writes the short story to share pieces of her own memories. Many of the details from the short story come from Naomi's own experience working at a restaurant. The story also works to convey that with time your wounds will heal. The main character in the book, speaks of her own experience and how the restaurant and the people changed her and how she changed the restaurant. This use of a maxim, “One thing about loss—you decided whom to share it with” (Nye 195).

When people are traumatized by an event they are pushed to experience the five stages of grief. The “Gospel”, by Philip Levine and “the boy detective loses love”, by Sam Sax both use characters that are going through one of the stages of grief. Levine and Sax both explain the thoughts and process of what a person thinks when they go through these stages with imagery. Levine uses symbolism, a sad tone, and a set setting in “Gospel” to illustrate that grieving takes you into a depth of thoughts. Sax uses anaphoras, an aggressive tone, and an ambiguous setting to convey that grieving takes you into a tunnel of anger and rage.
The elements of poetry are meant to be used as a way to connect the reader's mind to a certain idea or concept. Frequently, when poets write about adversity, they speak of the struggle they went through and overcome it with great optimism. However, Layli Long Soldier chose to truly express her adversity by allowing the complexities of grief to shine through her work. Her powerful elegy reveals that grieving is a profoundly personal experience that is also bonded to the universal human condition. In her contemporary piece 'Obligations 2', Long Soldier uses poetic form, anaphoras, and figurative language to support the message that grief is a collective experience that holds several journeys toward confronting it.

Loss is one theme demonstrated within the short story “Death of a Spinster” by William McIlvanney. The writer uses aspects of structure, imagery and word choice to create effect and impact throughout the short story. Loss is evident early in the story in its literal meaning, but as the story progresses, a metaphorical meaning of loss is also uncovered. The title of the short story “Death of a Spinster” immediately alerts the reader to the fact that there’s going to be a loss.
Storytelling is an important part in the making of a book, especially a great one that emphasizes on delivering a message to its reading audience. I am revisiting the graveyard of my most significant past emotions to discover a better understanding of my true emotions that make up my face, and my false emotions that design the mask over it. In the form of portraying my many tombstones, I’ll be writing out my own story, to an extension of fiction to assist any details that are needed to get the message across. Many stories express themselves as a certain theme (horror, romance, comedy, etc.), but a deeper message that is in the process of sending is one that writes out “tragedy”. A switch in perspectives is what great storytelling has
Through the use of various literary techniques, authors can create compelling pieces of literature. These techniques not only enhance the aesthetics of the text but also play a critical role in conveying them to the reader and allowing them to understand the author. Even though it is saddening to put the book down and finish reading, it was a fantastic book, and really catches the reader’s attention. The book is aimed for young adults readers, but will be enjoyed by anyone who likes sad, heartbreaking stories. It can make anyone and everyone cry. The use of figurative language really helped support the book and make it better. The figurative language drew out each scene of the book perfectly, Drawing out the picture helps the reader feel the emotions of the character and improve the books quality, and the multiple perspectives helped improve the book too.
Short stories bear many similarities to memoirs, especially in terms of theme. Yet they also differ in numerous ways because of their fictional nature. The four short stories that we read in the last week all had very intimate themes, such the family relationships in Great Rock and Roll Pauses, or the ideas about death, family, and presence communicated in Interesting Facts. Yet at the same time, they are different from memoirs in the way they carry narratives, and help to illustrate the stylistic and structural conventions of short story writing. As I mentioned before, I’ve found that memoirs and short stories are very similar in terms of theme development.
Underneath the speakers seemingly calm surface, however, a subliminal feeling arises that the speaker still feels each loss profoundly. Utilizing a first person point-of-view, to narrate the piece advances a newfound understanding of loss and
There is no comparison to the amount of pain a parent endures when they outlive their child. A tale of woe is what resides after such incident. An endless cycle of grief is exemplified in the short story “Night” by Bret Lott. The way the father in the story pays meticulous attention to detail makes the audience believe that he does not want to forget the existence of his child. He is merely in denial.
