Throughout the book, some of the characters suffer events resulting in grief and loss. Each character who must deal with these things eventually overcome their struggles by using the relationship and support of others, the value of trust in the future, hard work, and time. They form relationships and come together in unity to build each other up and get over their hardships. Throughout this essay, I will explain how Billy Joe overcomes the loss of her best friend, mother, and her beloved piano playing. Billy Joe uses all of the qualities above to overcome these faults. First, she lost her best friend, Livvie. As Livvie moved to California, Billy Joe faced loneliness. Billy Joe faced a rough road of recovery while getting over the loss of her best friend. She was also faced with envy, not only did she miss her friend, she wanted to go with her friend, away from the dust. To overcome her emotions, she kept herself busy. She played piano often and even used gigs as an excuse to get her mind off Livvie. She also helped Ma clean the wretched dust. ( With all that dust there was plenty to do.) Most people have a hobby that is important to them. Just like painting gives me creativity, imagination, and happiness, playing piano gave Billy Joe peace, happiness, and it made her look back on important memories with her family. When Billy Joe lost her ability to play the piano, it took away a fraction of her peace and happiness. Especially with her mother gone, she needed to play the piano, but couldn’t. With hard work and work ethic she overcame her pain and started to play the piano again. She also trusted in the future.
