“That I have. Must I say I’m quite surprised at what he has ordered us to do. What I would like to know is why does he want you dead?” Andres’ gaze shifted from Maria and then back to McKenzie.
McKenzie stood up and started pacing back and forth in front of the fire. “On the way back from Ojinaga, Morales came after the Soldadera’s. He killed them all except for Maria who managed to escape.” He glanced at her, hoping she wouldn’t mention the General’s name. He wouldn’t have mentioned hers either if she hadn’t shown up right here in the middle of nowhere.

“He said one of us tried to unman him.” Maria choked on the words, knowing full well it had been her that Morales was looking for. The vision of the slaughter flashed before her as guilt overwhelmed her. Had it not been for her attempt to kill Morales they would all still be alive.

Doesn’t anyone have an extra bedroll? Her stomach knotted with nervousness. Everyone was already sleeping, so there wasn’t anyone to ask. Whatever she did, she couldn’t allow herself to give into the attraction. She needed to stay strong and remember why she was here in the first place.
