What Makes an American? Ever since the Pilgrims stepped foot onto this new continent, they had one mission: Be determined, work hard, and always stay loyal. These values are what every American student should hold dear in their heart. Whether you’re a farmer in the 1700s or a businessman in 2016, the only way to be successful is to have a drive to succeed in everything you do. If you’re an American student, you need to value what every American does: Determination, Hard Work, and Loyalty. Determination is key because if you don’t have a drive to succeed in something, you won’t. Some people know exactly what they want and how they’re going to get it. Not only does an American student need to be loyal to his or her country, but to their family, friends, and others around them. This is well demonstrated in the trickster tale “Coyote and the Buffalo.” In this story, the sneaky Coyote and Buffalo Bull are arch enemies. In the beginning of the story, Buffalo is dead, but, as Coyote kicks and spits on the late Buffalo’s skull, Buffalo comes back to life. As the story progresses, they become good friends. Buffalo returns to his herd that he lived with because he remembered to stay loyal to what he loved. Every student in America should know and be taught that loyalty is so much more than sticking with somebody or something. It is having a sense of pride for that person or that thing, the sense of pride that they should feel for their great country. These, along with many other values are what people cherish. But why are Determination, Hard Work, and Loyalty in this essay? Because they are the most important. Without the determination that American soldiers have to protect out country through the years, where would America be today? Without the hard work of the pioneers in the 1700s and the farmers in the 21st century, where would America be today? And without the national loyalty of those who fought in the American Revolution to those firefighters who worked tirelessly at Ground Zero, where would America be today?
