In Ben Mikaelsen’s Touching Spirit Bear, the main character, Cole Matthews has mixed opinions about himself and nature throughout the book. The above haikus illustrate Cole’s feelings and opinions toward nature in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. The three haikus tell many things, including Aha Moment signposts, the fact that Cole is a dynamic character, and even one little theme of the book. They can teach you a lot about Cole as a character and the whole plot of the story.

Day 2 Day 3 plot: now the white bear and small brown bear are continuing the journey. But the black bear and large brown bear are going back to land because they are not meant to travel the ice. So two bears left the journey.

The book is carefully written from the first and third person point of view to help see and understand the events from different perspectives. The other main characters are Edwin, Garvey, Cole’s parents, and the Spirit Bear. The main themes of the book are the power of nature, anger, forgiveness, and healing.
Then at the end of the book when Peter and Cole see the spirit bear together, the relationship developed into the beginning of a friendship. “Peter insisted. ‘Will anyone believe us?’ ‘It doesn’t matter what other people think or believe,’ Cole said. ‘It’s what you believe.

In Touching Spirit Bear, written by Ben Mikaelsen, a violent teenager named Cole Matthews is sent on a mission to redeem himself, and faces radical experiences that ultimately change his whole mindset. He commits the crime of beating up a fellow peer, then is banished to an island as a punishment for his actions by the Circle Justice; a committee that serves as an alternative form of justice in the Tlingit culture. He then faces difficult and even deadly challenges. As a result of this experience, he changes from his ungovernable, supercilious ways as he comes to strong and sudden realizations of how wrong he was, and he learns how to be an honest and forgiving human being.
In the novel Schooled, by Gordan Korman , the main character Capricorn Anderson was a thirteen year old boy that has never experienced the real world and who grew up on a hippie commune with only his grandmother, Rain. After Rain was hospitalized, Capricorn went from being home schooled his entire life to Claverage Middle School. This was an experience that changed his whole life because he didn’t know how to act around other kids. Capricorn gets bullied because he dresses like a hippie from the 1960’s and has no common knowledge of the current society. Capricorn gets elected class president because his classmates think it will be a hilarious joke and will be made a fool.
Totem poles are a way to show who you are through symbolism. In the novel Touching Spirit Bear, Cole uses a totem pole to remind him how he needs to act everyday of his life. He carves his totem pole to let out his inner anger and to use his time on the island wisely. The first thing on my totem pole is a fish. Fish see things from underneath, just like I do.

The sun began to give way to the night as it hid behind Duckwall Mountain up in the Tuolumne hills. The smell of popcorn throughout the stadium would have been given the highest praise from Mr. Redenbacher himself. Fans piled into Thorsted Field like ants looking for a sweet area to claim as their own. The Bears marched onto the field as if they were mighty Mongolian Empire warriors being led to battle by Genghis Kahn - defeat not an option. Dressed in their finest battle gear, the Bears’ flag was carried in front of the troops as a way to show the fight of the night was on its way.
The book Ghost of Spirit Bear is a sequel to the book Touching Spirit Bear. I enjoyed this book because it has a good story and plot. While this book is not as adventurous or moving as the first book Ghost of Spirit Bear still has a good plot and creates vivid pictures in your mind while reading. I prefered Touching Spirit Bear over this book because it has more adventure and a more shocking story. The book consists mainly of the same characters but more were added when Peter and Cole go to school.
