The Short Bus: A Journey Beyond Normal by Jonathon Mooney portrayed the real meaning behind the definition of “normal”. Throughout Jonathon’s life, he suffered from the denial of teachers, family members, and himself when it came to his academic success. Despite the odds, he overcame his label of “learning disabled” and graduated from Brown University with a 4.0 GPA. Many other students labeled with a disability also suffer from the same aspects as Jonathon. In his book, Jonathon showed the mistreatment that not only he experienced in school, but he also showed how others struggled with an unsupportive school system.

Dr. Sandy Shugart was quickly advancing in his career. At the age of 25 he found himself as a senior leader in a large billion-dollar organization. In Dibs In Search of Self by Virginia Axline, a young boy named Dibs is causing trouble at school and at his home, refusing to talk, play, or participate in lessons of any kind. The author, a child therapist and psychologist, thus begins to help Dibs through a sequence of play therapy sessions every thursday, in a room where he would be free to do whatever he wanted, and his actions would be recorded. Here, Axline learns that Dibs had created a barrier around himself to avoid having to respond or interact with other people, which seems to have been caused by the lack of love and support from his parents. Him and his father have a poor relationship, where his father seems to lock him in his room when he does anything to annoy him. His mother thought he was mentally retarded, and resented him for a while since having a child ruined her career as a surgeon; and he never got along with his sister, Dorothy.
I am pleasantly surprised with this chapter book. The point of view is of a younger boy who has a lot of behavioral problems. Although he has good intentions he finds him self swallowing keys, cutting off peoples noses and jumping into hay bails on field trips. After being sent to a special education school for 6 weeks his life starts to turn around. He has never had a stable home life until his alcoholic mother decides to care for him again.
Monologue of an Outsider (Running on stage) I’m finally home. (Taking off backpack) I don’t want to ever go back to school again. I wish I never moved to Canada.

When the bell atop the desk rang, signaling the arrival of the first case, our day commenced. I followed the trail of people into the nearest exam room. Then, the usual introductions from Dr.Gray ensued, “this is Rachel, she is shadowing with us”. As Dr.Gray, the veterinarian, began her work, so did I, keeping a keen eye on everything she was doing and scribbling important points in my notebook. Each visit began in
Finally, a stage came when teachers as well as his parents judged him to be mentally defective. Thus, his teachers and administrators decided to give one last try and help Dibs overcome fear, rage and reach out for sunshine in his
As she told Sally, “[Y]ou should know that this issue could be detrimental for you. I will have to weigh the consequences of this conflict before I complete your annual performance evaluation” (Kowalski, pg. 61). Fearing for her job, Ms. Vasquez requested a meeting with the district superintendent, Dr. Frank Jobet. He listened and informed Sally that he would follow up with the principal. Upon hearing from Dr. Jonet, Mrs. Pelfrey became agitated and terse.
In the aspect of Mythology there are four functions which were created by the famed mythologist Joseph Cambell. These four functions, mystical, cosmological, social, and pedagogical, encompass the main ideas and beliefs of myths. The myth of Prometheus follows the guidelines of the social function. The myth follows those functions by showing the social order and explaining mans place in society.
Moment of Epiphany Epiphany is the feeling of realization of a major life-changing event. The day I woke up for my very first day of work was when I realized that I was becoming young adult. I 've never had a job before, not even babysitting, like every teen girl does. I was completely new to the work force. I had no idea what I was doing
“So this is what it’s like to be a lone wolf, having no one, my only friend is the one who looks back at me through the mirror.” I think this thought every day when I ride the bus, because I really have no friends. I sit in the very back of the bus, I go to school in a rather rural area in Pennsylvania, but my bus is packed. The elementary school kids are doubled and tripled in their seats, the high school kids are mostly doubled, accept for the three girls in seat eighteen, because nobody dared to sit with me. I wasn 't a weird kid, I didn 't move here recently, I did look bad, I had long black hair, 6”1 ', broad shoulders, rather slim but muscular from working on the farm, calloused hands from working with hay and tools, squared jaw, farmer
