Birth: Alyssa A scream pierces the air. A scream of betrayal. The air feels heavy, and the smell of blood intensifies. The ground collapses beneath her feet. Alyssa abruptly wakes up. She sits up petrified with fear. The sweat drips down her back and her brow. She shivers not only from the cold air but also from her nightmare. She finds herself in her room. She sees everything is just how it was before. The clothes still strewn about, her mirror looking back at her, and her unborn baby ready to come into this dark world. Her husband is sleeping on the couch. She remembers the fight they had just a few hours ago. She thinks to herself, “ It’s always about money with him. The smell of his shaving cream and cologne slaps her in the face. She remains in bed trying to go back to sleep. He walks out of their two bedroom apartment with not so much as a kiss on her forehead. Not even a simple goodbye to her or his child. As she hears his car peel off, she tears up and starts to cry. The baby wakes up and starts moving. They kick as if to say. “Don’t cry.” She whispers to the little one “You don’t like when Mommy cries do you? Well, are you hungry baby?” The baby kicks as in agreement. “I’ll take that as a yes,” she says as she chuckles. She slowly gets up and goes to the kitchen. Just like every day, she is alone. She starts the stove and makes some scrambled eggs. The sizzling makes her mouth water. She notices her baby is abnormally low. ” It’s a good thing I’m going to my check-up today,” she tells herself. She finishes up the eggs and sits at the table and quietly eats. While she eats, she notices she’s still having discharge. She thinks to herself,”That’s the third day in a row.” She starts getting scared. Suddenly it hits her. Her little one is coming. “Is it possible? I haven’t had any contractions.” she wonders to herself. She picks up her dirty dishes and washes them. “It’s time to do some chores,” she tells her little one. As she cleans the whole appointment; she is thinking about her life. She thinks about how she dropped out of college, how she got pregnant at 22, and how she gave up
