The story of Johnny Tremain shows us the story of the fictional main character, Johnny Tremain. The story takes place in Boston, Massachusetts in the summer of 1773. Johnny is an apprentice to Mr. Lapham, a silversmith. He lives in the Lapham household, which is where the silversmithing shop can be found. Johnny is arrogant and overzealous, unlike the rest of the household; they're humble and pious, but also in financial struggles. We learn that he is orphaned. Johnny's mother signs a contract before her death with Mr. Lapham for Johnny's apprenticeship and to be taken in. When he delivers the seditious newspapers for his work, he learns that Britain came out of the French and Indian war in debt. England wanted the colonialists to pay their debt, so they decided to tax goods to earn money. Many things such as tea were taxed at minimal rate. However, the East India trade company already paid for the tea. The colonists, however, did not like the taxes, and preferred their principles before their pocketbooks. They explained that this was "taxation without representation"; this meant that the colonists refused to be taxed unless they had representation in English parliament. Johnny and his friend, Rab, live in the attic of The Boston Observer where the meetings of the Observers take place. These secret meetings had plans to revolt against tea acts. Johnny helps in the plan by becoming responsible for memorizing the members of The Boston Observer. However, he is not permitted to keep a written copy of the names in case someone found it. Johnny also has the duty to ride around with his horse, Goblin, and tell all the members the time of the meeting. He prepared the punch and set the chairs. He is was also allowed to listen to the meetings and the plans. Johnny is then chosen to be one of the people to partake in the Tea Party, and practices for nearly twenty days to chop open crates. After twenty days, he is the given the duty by Rab to blow a whistle to signal the others if the Tea Party was going to take place at the moment. He got the signal (the signal are the words "now may God help my country"), blew the whistle, and ran as fast as he could and disguised himself as an Indian. Soon after, he runs back to the Wharf and starts chopping crates with the other boys; all the boys started dumping the tea into the Harbor. December 16, 1773 was the day this event took place.
