In Fahrenheit 451, the characters are ruled by a totalitarian government who control all aspects of their lives. The government promotes TV and technology in the society, so that people won’t have time to think about the faults in the government. In order to convert the people into mindless robots, the government burns books due to its controversial ideas which provoke thoughts. Many people are clueless about the harsh world they live in, yet they desire to remain ignorant and live in a fantasy world away from the cold reality. Ignorance may be blissful for a short period of time, but without acknowledging the problems, the solutions will never occur.
Fahrenheit 451 is set in a horrible, yet very possible, dystopian world. The setting is very undesirable because everyone thinks that books are bad so they have prohibited all of them. Everyone has this Belief because over time it has been convinced that books only bring sorrow. Most people have forgot about books and their importance, but the people who haven’t forgotten try to sneak books into their homes only to then have their homes burned, sometimes with them in it. Books are valuable, worth the time and effort, and in Montags’ world books are considered dangerous.
You must understand the importance of what books do, so you appreciate and experience what they offer. In Fahrenheit 451, people in the society can’t comprehend what books actual purpose is. When Montag first realizes the significance of books, he has to rethink everything: “There must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a women stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing”(Bradbury 48). Almost all the people in the society don’t even think twice about someone dying like that.
In Fahrenheit 451, the government basically Controls wan at the people watch, read, and discuss. They have blocked so much from the people that no one knows what's really going on in its day and age. People in real like get most of their knowledge and understanding from novels, newspapers, and etc. Since in the novel the government has burned and taken those away, society had nothing to base their knowledge and ideas off of. Since they have no knowledge kids in that age do chaotic things like race with their cars, mailbox smashing, pumpkin tossing, and some kill one another.
Society would be so much different without books. In the novel Fahrenheit 451, for many years books were outlawed. People found with books would be imprisoned. Ray Bradbury in his novel uses conflict to show knowledge and ignorance between characters. Even though the society in the novel Fahrenheit 451 was corrupt, most of the citizens were oblivious.
Finally, citizens conform to uniform expectations though individuals and dissent are bad. In Fahrenheit 451 a dystopian setting is seen through the restriction of information, independent thought, and freedom. In the society of Fahrenheit 451, the government looks down upon those who read books,
In Fahrenheit 451 and modern-day societies, books are being banned. But, only some books are banned in modern societies while all books are banned in the dystopian society in Fahrenheit 451. According to CBS News, “The 50 Most Banned Books in America”, books are being banned that relate to topics including racism, gender, and violence. Even though some books are more mature than others, they shouldn’t be getting banned since all books help people gain knowledge. All in all, both societies have rules that need to be followed, or else problems will
Dilemma of censorship: Possessing, reading, and distributing books is illegal in the book Fahrenheit 451. Society is only concerned with instant gratification from entertainment and prefers life in the fast-forward. Firefighters are now responsible to destroy books hidden in houses by burning down these houses. Interests other than technology and entertainment are not encouraged and these individuals are often targeted as threats. There is no clear reason of censorship in this future, but fast cars, loud music, and advertisements are all causes of an over-stimulated society, where literature, philosophy, and individual thought are forgotten.
In the story Fahrenheit 451 the society described lives in a world where reading books is not something people do. Books are seen as something that
While reading Fahrenheit 451, many different technologies were used to replace books. All of which were: TV walls, Mechanical Dogs, broadcasted commercials and ETC. The TV walls were viewed as ‘family’ to the viewers, because they made the viewers feel like their life and family were complete. “My ‘family’ is people. They tell me things: I laugh they laugh!
Fahrenheit 451 is a book of social criticism that warns against the dangers of suppressing thought through censorship. It uses the conventions and is a message that if the government, left unchecked, can be horrible and can do irreparable damage to society. It has many similarities and differences. One of the differences is that you can't read books because it is illegal and whoever is caught reading a book would get the death penalty but in our society, you can freely read a book if you want to. One similarity is that some books are banned in our world and all books are banned in their world.
Furthermore, the government has a firm grasp on society in a dystopia. The government exercises control over its populace, as described further in 'The Giver,' by deciding which tasks each individual is allotted. As a result, power in 'Fahrenheit 451' is just as oppressive, if not more so, than in 'The Giver.' The people in 'Fahrenheit 451' are continually monitored by the government to ensure that no one is reading books, and if you are discovered, you will be punished horribly. In our own civilization, the government restricts what we can and cannot do, but not as tightly as in other dystopian nations.
The Power Of Knowledge People can rely on literacy and social awareness to help them be better aware and more thoughtful. But when people have neither of these skills it can harm the view they have on their surroundings. Fahrenheit 451 is an example of what would happen if social awareness and literacy were looked down on. In the society where the story takes place in not many are socially aware or can read. This lack of awareness and literacy drives people to take great lengths for their beliefs and wants, this is a problem because they don't think about the consequences their actions will have.
The burning of these banned books is meant to be a way of censoring targeted ideas and messages in a dystopian society. Similarly, our society has once tried to censor certain books by creating a banned book list in the United States. This list challenged books that mentioned controversial topics, and the ideas from these books were silence and censored from the public. Another similar trait shared by our society and the society in Fahrenheit 451 is how media and technology have made an impact on the functioning of society.
In the Novel Fahrenheit 451, one way that the government controls their society is by outlawing owning and reading any type of literature. There are a couple reasons why the government does this. One reason they ban books is because they want everyone to be equal, so everyone is more comfortable with the way they are. There are no more labels, such as “Genius” or “Stupid” or “better”. As Beatty states in the book “We must all be alike.
