Has it ever occured what does it take for an extracurricular activity to be considered a sport? According to research, cheerleaders require strategy and skill to be considered an athletics. While cheerleaders perform complex skills, others do not consider cheerleading as a sport. Cheerleading is a sport because it raises school spirit at school events, fosters hard work and dedication into something they love, and performs different and complex tasks. Standing under the Friday night lights and pumping up the crowds, cheerleaders are one of the main focuses at any school event. Some say cheerleaders do not even need to be at school events. Sara Green, the author of “Cheerleading Squads”, explains that some of the best supporters for another team member are the cheerleaders whether it may be a football player or basketball player. If a football or basketball team is down by points or losing a game it is usually the cheerleader’s job to boost the crowds and players to finish the game.
