Should Childhood Vaccinations Be Mandatory?
There has been a lot of debating going on about whether childhood vaccinations should be mandatory or not. Some people believe that vaccinations causes autism, but it has been proven that autism is not caused by vaccinations and there is no evidence to support that autism is caused by them. According to Claire McCarthy from Harvard Health Publications, “Thimerosal in vaccines does not cause autism. Really. Scientists have been saying this for a while. In fact, in 2004 the Institute of Medicine, put out a detailed, thorough report saying that there was no link between thimerosal and autism. Diseases that once killed thousands of children have been eliminated because of vaccines. Vaccines can prevent children from getting diseases like polio which have long lasting effects and can even cause death. If we do not keep vaccinating children, then polio and other devastating and deadly diseases could return. According to Vaccines.gov, “Polio was once America’s most-feared disease, causing death and paralysis across the country, but today, thanks to vaccination, there are no reports of polio in the United States”. (“Five Important Reasons to Vaccinate Your Child”) Whooping cough is another disease that can be prevented by vaccines. If children do not get vaccinated for whooping cough, then they can easily get it from day cares and other children who aren’t vaccinated. The symptoms can include, severe coughing and a fever. The disease can also spread to older family members who never go the vaccine either, so if the child gets vaccinated it could save the child’s life and also the family’s. According to Stanford Medicine, “By adding a vaccination campaign into the model at different times, the researchers could predict the best time to vaccinate for a future pandemic. Vaccinating at six months after the start of the outbreak instead of nine (the timing of vaccination for the 2009 H1N1 pandemic) would prevent more than 230,000 infections and almost 6,000 additional deaths in a city of 8.3 million people. The city would also save $51 million in medical bills”. It can also help save the community and government save money by reducing how much they spend on treating people if there are less people getting sick.
In conclusion, childhood vaccinations should be mandatory because it can save children 's lives, prevent old diseases from coming back and helps prevent new diseases, and it can also save you, society, and the government’s money. If we require vaccinations, then we can finally get rid of all of the terrible diseases that can be and already eradicated. If we work together we can make the world a little safer for our
