Should Drinking age be lowered to 18?

A pie chart made by ProCon.org shows which countries abide by what laws concerning the drinking age if any. On the borderline of 50%, countries go by the legal drinking age of 18. The other majority of 40% go by no law regarding drinking age at all. Surprised? So why are we, in this country still refuse to lower the drinking age to 18?

The legal drinking age should be lowered to 18 because of legal allowances that come with being 18 such as purchasing cigarettes, joining the military, being convicted as an adult and of course legally vote. According to WiseGeek the legal adult age is 18, so why we are the United States are not allowing our legal adults to drink? Some people may think drinking age should stay the same because of the negative health effects and deterioration of social responsibilities. According to national institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism states that drinking could cause strokes, high blood pressure, cancer, and it could slow down your immune system. It is said that not as many young adults would feel the need to consume alcohol because it would not be against the law. Also “At age 18, one can serve on a jury, sign a contract, and be responsible for one's debts. At age 18, one is able to put one's life on the line in the service of country. But one may not buy a beer.” (“Drinking Age Law and Legislation”) This shows that the government does not trust legal adults of The United States to make simple decisions such as buying a beer, but allowing 18 year-olds to serve our country in combat for life or death seems to be okay.
