Most teens will argue that they should change the age because they can go to a store or a gas station and they can buy a pack of cigarettes, a black n mild, play the lottery at the age of eighteen so they will ask so why can they not buy a beer or alcohol at the age of eighteen. Underage drinking has been out of control in the United States because teenager use fake identification cards and they will also try to go to the club with their identification card. 21 and older: not younger Image being called at midnight being told your child died in a car accident because of a drunk driver. As a matter of fact, an estimated of 5,000 people under the age of twenty-one die every year from drunk driving (NIH). Why would we allow more younger groups of people to drink, if they have already shown that they are irresponsible? The drinking age should not be lowered to eighteen because it encourages reckless behavior, causes developmental issues, and teenagers are not mature enough.
First reason the drinking age should not be lowered to eighteen is because of the obvious health issues. The brain is still developing in an adolescent which not only makes them more vulnerable to the toxic effects of alcohol but can also cause irreversible brain damage. Neuroscientist Susan Tapert conducted a study and compared the brain scans of adolecesents that drank and the scans that didn’t drink, the drinkers “appeared to have a number of little dings throughout their brains ' white matter, indicating poor quality, and poor quality of the brain 's white matter indicates poor, inefficient communication between brain cells. ”(qtd. in Trudeau) Alcohol does the most damage to the frontal lobe which is part of the brain that is responsible for planning, forming ideas, using self control and making decisions.
According to a survey by National Public Radio, young people can be identified as young adults at the age of 18 as the brain is fully developed and the young adults can think and make decision like another mature person. Almost each and every country has its legal voting and driving age as 18. If a person has the right to choose the president of a country and drive on the roads which requires a lot of responsibility because its the question about the safety of other people on the road as well the leader who has to lead the country in each and every possible way which requires maturity. If a person is capable of taking responsibilities like electing the president and driving then I think that the legal age to drink should also be 18 instead
Should the drinking age really be lowered when it could do more harm than what it already does now? Many people are protesting the drinking age to be lowered to 18 because that's when people technically become an adult. But humans are not reaching their full potential due to the drinking age has been already too low. The drinking age should be raised because scientific studies show that the human brain is still developing until the age of 25.
Drinking is a common way to meet up with past friends and talk with people from your past. Drinking takes responsibility for those drinking. Adults from ages 18-20 should be able to drink because they understand the responsibility it comes with . The age limit for drinking should be lowered because when you turn 18 you can vote and serve your country,it would make the roads safer, also it would help the economy. Countries across the globe have legal drinking ages ranging from 16-18, to no age limit at all.
Teaching children to drink safely starting while they’re 18 and living with their parents will help them develop healthy habits which will stick with them, helping them drink
The debate about whether the legal drinking limit in America is the right age has been going on for decades. Only July 17, 1984, Ronald Reagan who was president at the time signed the national minimum drinking age act. This meant that the states had to raise the drinking age to Twenty-One. Americans are able to vote, drive, join the army, and get married but aren’t allowed to drink because of the law. It is unclear why the responsibility of drinking alcohol has more strict laws over these other responsibilities.
