Should Guns Be Allowed on College Campuses? Have you ever wondered how it would be like to know every student in your classroom carried a gun? Many worry on how this would change the college experience for everyone attending, working and visiting a campus. Guns on campus should not be permitted because it would encourage more violent crime, distraction from the learning environment, and increase in suicide.
On the other hand, people for gun rights claim guns on campus are what students need to keep themselves safe. The reasons for this are: the right to bear arms, being able to avoid shootings, and also gives the individual a chance to fight back. They believe perpetrators choose to strike a campus because it’s a venerable place in which there is a “no guns” policy. “The combination of alcohol, drugs and guns is a dangerous mix that could lead to additional and more lethal, violence on campus” (Students For Gun-Free Schools, 635). The other issue people are concerned about is how do we know who is capable of killing someone. We all wouldn’t want people who suffer from a mental illness to carry weapons yet alone encouraging them to doing so for any cause. On April 16, 2007 a Virginia Tech student murdered 32 and wounded 17 people on campus. The student had psychological and behavior problems but he was still able to buy a gun (Skorton and Altschuler, 628). The idea of having students, staff and visitors the ability to carry armed weapons, no one would be accountable of any situation because it soon be our duty to keep each other safe. This is a flashback to how it was in the Wild West when guns were the solution to everything. Instead of moving backwards why not move forward to improving a better way in making our campuses
