It is important in our society that kids should play competitive sports because competition teaches them what parents cannot. My contention is that kids should play competitive sports because it teaches them things about life that they cannot learn in a classroom. For a start playing competitive sports teaches kids coping skills. When kids play sports they sometimes feel sports-related stress. The stress can be good but it can also be harmful. Some positive effects can be preforming better, staying focused, and learning to cope with adversity. Too much stress can have bad effects such as having trouble with schoolwork or them not wanting to play sports anymore. Some ways to help kids manage stress is by teaching them to breath deeply, relax, have fun, and avoid being a perfectionist. This supports the idea of how competitive sports teaches kids to cope with stress. Following that, competitive sports helps kids with healthy eating and staying in shape. There is an increase in overweight and obese people in the world. People that are overweight or obese are more likely to have health problems. Playing sports shows kids that it is enjoyable to get exercise and helps them stay active. Good sportsmanship could be considered the golden rule of sports. A few ways to show good sportsmanship are by playing fair, following the rules, respecting the judgement of referees and officials, and treating opponents with respect. Ways to practice good sportsmanship are, learn as much as you can about the sport and play by its rules, talk politely act nice toward everyone, never use violence, and always congratulate your opponents whether you won or lost.
