One of the most problematic situations college students face is the struggle of finding food. From the difficulty of finding appetizing meals to not having enough money to purchase food, there are a plethora of various issues students come across on a daily basis. One specific food issue that students who attend Southern Adventist University question is the absence of many wish there to be authentic meat options available to them on campus (Niere). Although this university has an Adventist-based curriculum and practices Adventist beliefs, serving meat will not tarnish the wholeness of the university. Instead, allowing the food services to serve meat will provide more variety of food options to choose from, increase student satisfaction and allow cultural clubs to serve authentic meal platters. Being an Adventist institution, one of the main beliefs observed is the practice of a plant-based, vegetarian diet. Dr. Philip Samaan, professor at the School of Religion, strongly argued when asked about campus food services serving meat, saying:
If they do that, it would show that the Adventist church that operates this school supports meat eating…If students want to go out and eat meat, that’s fine…It’s just like if you were to come to my house. My wife and I are vegetarians, therefore, we would serve you a vegetarian meal. We know you may be meat-eaters, but because you are in my home, I will serve you what we cook in our home.
