In the Diary of Anne Frank, Mr. Van Daan caused the most tension in the secret annex. His snarky remarks throughout the play initiated a tense atmosphere in the secret annex. Although many people believe Mrs. Van Daan was the central cause of tension in the secret annex, I disagree. Mr.Van Daan caused a lot of tension in the secret annex. He is a selfish person because he sold his wife's fur coat to buy cigarettes and stole food from the storage bin.
Kicking people out should only happen for the right reasons. Ms. Frank kicked out the Vann Dann's for the following reasons. The Vann Dann's in the Diary of Anne Frank play are represented as selfish stealers, Ms. Vann Dann being disrespectful and her also being rude, and lazy. In the first place, stealing food from the Franks during such a difficult time is selfish of Mr. Vann Dann.
In her diary, she concedes that she is inquisitive and talkative and comments about the other people who share the attic. Second, Ann was artistic because she kept several diaries during her stay in the Secret Annex. In them she described life in the Annex, her dreams, and her fears. She didn’t take the Annex like a prison she took it like an obstacle that she would escape over time. Third she is a rebel and spoiled by her father because, One person who has big arguments with Anne was her mother, Mrs. Frank.
I could kill you for this. I could just kill you! (Mrs. Van Daan goes up the stairs, clutching the coat. Mr. Van Daan starts after her.)” This evidence shows that Mrs. Van Daan is a sensitive character and even though Anne apologized for her actions, she still got mad and outbursts on her.
If you look deeper into the story, you can see that Mr. Van Daan was not very nice to the others in the annex. Mr Van Daan was extremely rude to his son for no reason. For example, when his son, Peter, was doing his school work, Mr. Van Daan got upset at Peter because he was not finished. The Frank girls had already finished their work. Mr. Van Daan basically was putting Peter down and did not want to help him because he "Did not listen to him.

In the midst of all the chaos, Mrs. Van Daan does not help the situation and is making it worse. Before they went into hiding, the Frank family lived in Frankfurt, Germany. However, due to the increasing death of Jews by the Nazis, they fled to Amsterdam in 1933, where they were safe. They lived there for a couple of years before the Nazis forced them to go into hiding in the secret attic above Mr. Frank’s work building.
Anne was a poor girl from Mississippi and her parents were sharecroppers and did not have the money to send her to college. Her parents just wanted her to go to college
There were a Mrs. and Mr.Van Daan as well as their son Peter. Mr.Dussel was a dentist before the war. Anne had to go through a lot of hardship throughout her life. They were all scared of being caught by the green police and been taken to a concentration camp. She had developed a lot of emotions with her stay in hiding.
Frank notes that the “hard words” and teasing apathy of her mother have damaged their relationship immensely - so much that she doesn’t even see Mrs. Frank as her mother. These conflicts have been spurred by the family’s situation. Living in close quarters and seeing no one but your family for an extended period of time is bound to cause arguments, and the Franks are no exception. They are willing to give away their own comfort and personal needs for the Van Daans to have their own privacy. The most important thing that the Franks and Van Daans went through was a time of fear. No matter how much happiness came through in their lives they always had fear jumbled up inside their heads. As the Frank family and the Van Daans were cooped up in the annex- the place of hiding they were practiclly shocked and very fearful of the Nazi’s. Being fearful was something that came upon them and was totally normal for a person to have like the Franks and Van Daans, because everyone is fearful no matter what type of predicament their trapped in.
