In the Diary of Anne Frank, Mr. Van Daan caused the most tension in the secret annex. His snarky remarks throughout the play initiated a tense atmosphere in the secret annex. Although many people believe Mrs. Van Daan was the central cause of tension in the secret annex, I disagree. Mr.Van Daan caused a lot of tension in the secret annex. He is a selfish person because he sold his wife's fur coat to buy cigarettes and stole food from the storage bin. This evidence demonstrates that Mr.Van Daan is an egotistical man that only wants to satisfy his own needs. In scene 3, paragraph 1 and page 215 he was caught stealing a loaf of bread by Mrs. Frank. As a result, Mr. Van Daan's greedy and selfish actions caused much tension in the secret annex.
