Should Prometheus have Given Humans the Gift of Fire? Fire is prominent across all mythology and in Greek Mythology humans were left with nothing. Until, Prometheus felt pity and gave them the gift of fire. Some people would argue that fire is not a gift and was never meant for humans to use because it was too powerful. Despite the devastating capabilities of fire, Prometheus should have given us the gift of fire because it gave us a way to live and become the people we are today. At the start of the legend, Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus were tasked in creating creatures to roam earth and giving each creature certain qualities. So Prometheus worked on what we know now as humans and Epimetheus created the other creatures. When Epimetheus had finished creating the other creatures, he had used up all of the special qualities (Amy Friedman). So, when Prometheus created humans, there wasn’t anything left for the humans to have. As a result of Epimetheus’ lack of forethought, humans were easily killed and taken advantage of. Prometheus took pity on the humans and stole fire from Mount Olympus, giving it to the humans. This gave humans a way to evolve and advance into the people we are today. …show more content…

When humans first discovered fire they used it to keep them warm when they slept allowing for fur to become unnecessary, making humans use less energy while moving, as well as fire cooking food making so that we use less energy digesting food (Smithsonian Magazine). Fire helped us evolve so that more energy be used on our brains making humans better at thinking, making plans, and creating social hierarchies. All of this started because of fire, and if humans never created/were given fire who knows what would’ve happened. Would we still probably be the unevolved homo-erectus, but because of fire, for better or worse, we are who we are
