In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, two members of rival families marry in secret, leading to a series of events that ultimately lead to both of their deaths. The marriage of Romeo and Juliet should have never happened. This is because it led to misery and death, along with the separation of families. One could argue that the two could not have foreseen these events and were letting themselves choose their own love rather than others choosing for them. However, current rivalries should have made the flaws of their plan obvious. The deaths of Tybalt and Mercutio caused an upset among both houses who want consequences for those involved. This brings misery to all, Romeo plunges into a depression upset at the loss of his friend and in distress due to his banishment from Verona as a repercussion of him killing Tybalt. On the other side, the Capulets have lost Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin. Juliet has mixed emotions; she is sad over her cousins’ death but is devastated over Romeo’s banishment. There is a shift in Lord’s Capulets character, the loving, caring, and protective father is no longer there. A controlling leader has taken over his fatherly character. Juliet refuses to marry Paris because she is already married to Romeo. Regardless of her father’s threats, due to secrecy of Romeo and Juliet’s marriage, Juliet cannot reveal the reason she will not marry Paris.
