Should School Lunch Be Free for All Faculty and Students? For many years, school lunch was a cheap and healthy way for people, who attend school, to receive lunch. Lunch at school has changed to being less popular, for many reasons. School lunches can be costly because students and teachers don't always receive the portion size they are paying for; it can put stress on parents to be sure their student does not have school lunch debt; and the healthiness of the food is not always the best.

Some schools do a great job providing healthy options, while others do not. It is easy for students to only eat unhealthy snacks for a meal. Not all schools require students and teachers to eat a nutritious meal daily. Sometimes it is up to the student to create a healthy and nutritious meal. Students can create a nutritious meal by choosing options that are high in protein, fiber, and nutrients, and low in sugar and unhealthy fats. It is also important for everyone to drink plenty of water and avoid sugary drinks. South Dearborn has the option of energy drinks for students, these drinks are dangerous and should not be allowed at schools (Dixon, 2023). Children who do not receive the nutritional lunches they need may end up facing obesity. “School food should appeal to children but should also be healthy and full of nutrients. Otherwise, food that is high in fat and calories helps contribute to the obesity problem in the U.S. The percentage of children and adolescents affected by obesity has more than tripled since the 1970s. Nearly one-fifth of school-aged children have obesity” (US Regents, 2019). School lunches should be filled with more nutritional foods and should be taken more seriously (Dixon, 2023).
