The Illinois Family Institute is just as the name says. It’s a family-based organization with conservative views, who promotes “marriage, family, life, and liberty”. Among this organization is Laurie Higgins, the author of the article “Parents Should Fight ‘Comprehensive’ Sex-Ed”. Initially from the title, the article looks like she would be in support of abstinence-only education, since it’s the opposite approach of comprehensive sex-ed. However, Higgins takes the conservative approach one step farther and alludes to the idea that public schools shouldn’t even teach students about sex.
It is also important that we provide accurate and proven sexual classes to our students. More than 80% of Americans believe that a form of sexual education should be taught in schools.5 The majority of these people believe that this education should be focused on various forms of birth control. Currently the federal government provides funds for these evidence-based types of education through the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative and the Personal Responsibility Education Program. I will support programs that seek to expand funding for programs that teach a variety of birth control methods
The educational Sex Ed by Anna Quindlen was a discussion on the need for sex education among teenagers and the involvement of the parents in the education of
Censoring topics like sex education or homosexual relationships does nothing but harm. Teenagers are unable to learn about these topics in safe environments and might end up making a life-changing mistake. People might argue that sex education should be taught at home by parents, but how do we know they are correctly educated on the subject, that is, if they even have the talk with their kids. By making sex education a required class, teens are more likely to make smart and informed decisions about their bodies. Not only does it educate them now, it also allows them to grow into smart adults.
It’s now more common for sex to be a topic of conversation then it was forty plus years ago and teens are more open to talk about sex than past generations. “Texas lawmakers are still way out of step with common sense and public opinion. Some even argue that sex education gets teens so “hot and bothered” that they can’t wait to jump in the sack with each other. Check The Numbers”. People don’t like being told what do especially teens who feel they are treated like they don’t know a thing and are expected to act like adult but at the same time are treated like they aren’t intelligent and as if they were motivated by constant deviant thoughts.
“Schools preach ‘enthusiastic’ yes in sex consent education” by Emmanuella Grinberg (CNN, 09/29/2015) is about the measure that school should take to prevent sexual misconduct among students. Many female students have reported that they being raped either forcefully or while they were passed out drunk. As a result, some schools created affirmative consent law, in which schools prohibit any sexual activity if both partners don not a mutual agreement on having sex. “It could define a great deal of sexual activity as sexual activity as “sexual assault” and undermine due process rights of the accused. I like the fact that there are people out there working to stop sexual violence.
I agree with Nussbaum’s argument that the liberal arts are important not only in education, but also in society. An education in the liberal arts opens one’s horizons and understandings of various subjects such as, poetry, art, and theatre. Having a broad education helps students decide who they want to be vocation wise and character wise. She argues that “Education is not just for citizenship” (Nussbaum 1). The studies help one become more socially aware and a better member to society because the knowledge given through liberal arts studies helps one connect with others and understand the human condition.
The government spends over $170 million each year in subsidies and federally funds for abstinence only sex education programs across the nation (Beh and Diamond). There are three main groups that contribute financially to abstinence programs in America (CITE THIS). The first being the Adolescent Family Life Act (AFLA) of 1981, which was founded in opposition to the Title X Family Planning Program which provides contraception for low income families. The AFLA is the smallest monetary contributor, but is attributed with providing the ground work for abstinence programs at a federal level. Title V came about in 1996 as a stricter version of AFLA.
Success is Impossible Without Self-Discipline To succeed, you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you (Dorsett). Many people have been trying to get sports banned in public schools due to the dangers, distractions, and the enormous costs they carry with them. Many other schools think that sports are helpful to a student's academic success and general well being. Despite the fact that some schools are eliminating sports, facts show that sports should stay in public schools. Exercise is known to boost energy and mood.
It is uncommon in the United States that sex education accentuates learning about sexual desire or pleasure, especially for girls. American culture harbors apprehension and discord about sex, complicating how girls communicate and view their sexuality, relinquishing any sexual confidence they should possess. American teenagers, commonly grow up hearing jokes about women’s bodies and sexuality lending to masculinizing sex and exerting power over women. In cultures where this is prominent behavior, such as America, males talk in a much more crude manner about sex and women, reinforcing a warped sense
“You can’t go into that bathroom,” I was heartbroken. “Why can’t I go into that bathroom?” “You’re a girl-you have to act like one”(Jessy). The LGBT community has been unfairly mistreated and segregated all throughout history and even today transgenders are not getting the love and support they deserve in many places including some schools. Being transgender is not something inferior or wrong, it simply means that a person identifies as a different sex than they were born with.
