Should the book of the author be held accountable for his past mistake? The book The absolutely true diary of a part-time indian by Sherman Alexie came out in 2007 and it was a hit! Teens all over the country were hooked and Native American kids finally felt seen! This book was getting all kinds of awards for properly informing teens about native american culture and bringing up really serious topics such as racism, alcoholism and much more. Then tragedy struck, Sherman Alexie's horrible past arose and became known all over America. “The birth of the reader must be ransomed by the death of the Author.” (The death of the Author) Pulling out the phrase, “Reader must be ransomed by the death of the author” shows us that the book has any meaning that the reader wants it to have and that can either mean that it is bad due to the authors past or it is great because of the moral of the book and not the authors past actions. I feel as if an author and their books weren’t separate there wouldn’t be any books. I mean an example of this is Jk rowling's books. She is extremely transphobic and I don’t agree with ehr morals at all, but the Harry Potter series has me hooked and I never thought about the author's personal life because I enjoyed the book so much. I think that when authors and their books are separated they are doing nobody any harm and that if the book is making people happy it should not be taken away from people due to the authors poor decisions. As a reader myself, if I really did not want to read a book based on the author's decisions I wouldn’t and I think I speak for others who might agree with me. Even if you wouldn’t buy a book due to the author's bad decision, you should not take the joy away from other people who are fulfilled reading these books. Do you think the fate of the book should be in the readers …show more content…
Sherman alexie as we all know hurt many some. A piece of evidence from Why the best kids books are written in blood by sherman alexie states, “And now I write books for teenagers because I vividly remember what it felt like to be a teen facing everyday and epic dangers. I don’t write to protect them. It’s far too late for that. I write to give them weapons–in the form of words and ideas-that will help them fight their monsters. I write in blood because I remember what it felt like to bleed.” This cna show us that his books are written to inspire teens, not encourage them to do bad things. Sherman alexie knew he was in the wrong, but he never encouraged others to follow in his footsteps. Pulling out “I write to give them weapons' ' shows us that although the reader may not know it, the books are made so they can feel good and feel safe. Now this has sparked controversy about his book. I believe that his book is sending a wonderful message and this is a situation where you must separate the author and their work. Although what he did was not acceptable at all it’s still okay to enjoy his book because it is sending a great message to people and showing them a whole new world. It talks about struggle, alcoholism, abuse and racism. These are topics you don’t find often. Now the book does not talk about hurting women or send a message that it’s ok which is why it’s completely ok to
