Does the United States Need an Official Language?
A young lady walked into a grocery store and not being able to understand what the cashier was saying as she checked out. Would this be an issue? The thing is that this could actually happen. The United States does not have an official language, and one is needed. There are many reasons why the United States could use an official language. The United States needs an official language so the nation will be unified, there will be no language barrier, and so immigrants know what will be spoken when coming to America.
The U.S having an official language is a must to unify the nation as a whole. 20% of Americans don’t know the most commonly spoken language in America, English. But if the 20% did, it would strengthen their democratic participation. This shows that if you can speak and interpret English then you will have a bigger role in civic life. Now the 20%, that previously could not participate, would not be able to have a bigger role in schools, churches, and all sorts of things including, or next president. Many people think that making English the official language of the U.S would contradict the values of the country. Many labels on everything in America have Spanish and English on them. Not only does this cause tons of confusion, but it’s a waste of paper and ink. These companies are making it easier and easier for non-English speakers. If everyone spoke the same language there would be no language barrier disconnecting us.
