Approximately 3.3 million people in the United States receive the minimum wage and some may receive even less because they are tipped employees or a full-time student says DeSilver. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary the minimum wage “is a wage fixed by legal authority or by contract as the least that may be paid either to employed persons generally, or to a particular category of employed persons.” Even today, when the minimum wage has gone through a raise in the past couple of years, women are still earning less then men.

It is ironic that the government and society in general encourage women to have families, to preserve the species, yet when they do begin a family and they have a “career interruption to care for their family …these types of interruptions have an impact on long term earnings” (Patten). Women tend to get the lower paying jobs because “women are about twice as likely as men to say they had been discriminated against at work because of their gender (18% vs. 10%)” (Patten). Many employers do not want to hire women for important roles because women are more likely to ask for a leave due to personal complications.
