After reading the novel Twisted, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, I have become more aware of how different emotions and attitudes that people have can positively or negatively affect how they’re viewed by society. Furthermore, an individual’s attitudes and actions can also change their perspective of the world and the quality of their life. Early on in the book, we are introduced to the main character Tyler, who is an emotional, unpopular, and insecure seventeen year old senior who is hoping for things to change. Throughout the story, we follow his emotional rollercoaster filled with his thrilling highs and devastating lows. After researching astrology signs and their true meanings about specific traits, I have decided that Tyler fits within the Cancer symbol.
Symbolism In the novel, Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, she uses a lot of symbolism. One example of this is the recurring importance of rain. The novel is set in the Great Depression, which plays a large role in how her life is played out throughout. Billie Jo’s father is a white wheat farmer, struggling due to the lack of rain for his crops.

In this influential story, the cultural and language barriers between Lia Lee’s family and her doctors caused Lia’s life to be negatively impacted due to improper diagnosis and treatment. The Lees preferred traditional and spiritual treatment that clearly differed from the doctors’ Westernized treatment. Through a constant battle between proper treatment and the Lee parent’s compliance, this caused Lia to live in a persistent vegetative state for the majority of her life. Have you ever thought about how difficult it might be to go into a different country knowing absolutely nothing, not even language, and something horrific happened to you or anyone in your family? Don’t you think you would feel so powerless, so helpless, so clueless? This happens commonly and it has never had any attention brought to it, at least not until 1998. Anne Fadiman wrote a book entitled, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down. This demonstrated a collision of two complete opposite cultures, but they both have the same goal to help the child get better.

Disease is the commonly thought of concept in which a person suffers due to a physiological or psychological ailment, while illness refers to a culmination of physical, emotional and social suffering of a person. Writers and poets often spread deep meaning in ordinary things: bowl can represent our parents’ heritage, food can represent our relationships with people and chocolate bar can be a symbol of childhood or green tea can be a symbol of love. Those simple things can be really meaningful, but mostly all authors understood the meaning of those objects and the value of the moments that they had lived only after several years. To take things for granted is a human nature, isn’t it? Children usually don’t listen to the voice of their parents, but when they grow up they understand how precious those lessons were.
Betsy Betsy, nicknamed “Pollyanna Cowgirl” by Doreen and Esther, is a cheery, bubbly girl that is on the same scholarship as Esther. She seems very well brought-up and like a hard worker. Esther goes back and forth between seeing herself as one with Betsy and one with Doreen, and it seems like Esther wishes she could be as high-spirited and cheerful as Betsy is. Betsy is also quite physically attractive; Esther refers to her “bouncing blonde ponytail and Sweetheart-of-Sigma-Chi smile”. Esther seems to looks upon her with both disdain and admiration.
After Thea got hold of the loft room, it greatly impacted Thea's life and character. Thea uses the loft room as a symbol of peace. The space was there for her to comfort her and give her the privacy that she needed. In the text written by Willa Cather, it states that "it was one of the most important things that ever happened to her." This meant that the loft room was the best thing she could have.
The term “melting pot” has been used since the early 1900s, and it means a place where people, ideas, theories, cultures, etc. are mixed together. Although this may seem like a harmless thing, the idea that one must give up part of their culture to obtain parts of a new one undermines the importance of cultures in one’s life. In chapter 14 “The Melting Pot” of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, Anne Fadiman shows the challenges and hardships that Hmong immigrants faced when immigrating to America to show the power that an environment has on a person’s connection to their culture, and the impact that people have on the culture of the society they are entering Fadamin provides examples of the action of Americans towards to Hmong people

These ‘policemen’ were sent to Poland, or the Soviet side of Poland to maintain order. There were thousands of men who were not wanting to enlist into the military to be on the front lines, thus deciding to join the police. The policemen had two ‘decrees’ to keep up with, it was described in the book Ordinary Men written by Christopher Browning, the commissar order; which involved for on-the-spot execution of any communist suspect of being an anti-German.
