The poem “ Sick” by Shel Silverstein is my favorite children's poem. This piece is told from a perspective of a young child who is unenthusiastic and reluctant to going to school. The child uses a list of wild ailments to justify her inability of attending school that day. However, at the end of the poem once he lists everything from chickenpox to a shrunken brain, the child is told that the day is Saturday. At this point, all of the illness and afflictions mystically disappear and he goes out to play. The theme of this poem is believed to be geared towards young children teaching them to not lie or exaggerate the truth. For society, the poem teaches us that our daily responsibilities need to be completed and apathy is unacceptable- a lesson
